What do you consider an animal hoarder?

No offense taken! I'm not usually a whistle blower type, so all of this is new ground for me. I usually take a dim view on the ASPCA for the various tales I have heard where they stuck their noses in where it clearly did not belong. Also wondering why they aren't policing this adoption process? As for the news media in these parts? Family owned businesses that are related to everyone else in these parts. To say their reporting of things have a slant, would be calling the Hoover Dam a kiddie pool! I'll do some asking around, but I don't hold much hope. :|

I also am trying help so please don't take offense. Here is a link to look at I believe that they can help http://www.wvhumane.com/ Please check it out....
I don't know what stories you have heard about ASPCA but I do know that some groups are put in a negative light on some cases and then some (like PETA in my opinon) are just to far over the edge. I work Part time for the Humane Society of Missouri. And I know that we keep things anonymous as much as possable. There a certain items that are needed to make a strong case to get charges through the court systems. But if the poor abused animals don't have someone to speak for them they will most likely continue to endure their suffering until they die. And those people (I use the term loosely) get by with it they will only continue to treat more animals inhumanely.

I certainly hope you understand where I am coming from.

Thanks, karanleaf! I will look into it. I looked at the link but didn't find much to go on about why the humane society would give such a man as this, or my sister, for that matter, animals in an adoption or foster care situation. She also has rescued horses that have no shelter, suffer severely from rain rot, etc. If they are going to be so helpful, why did they give these people these animals in the first place? I can tell you, they couldn't have checked this man's premises, as it would take YEARS for someone's place to get that bad!

The irony of this is, a couple years ago I was planning to adopt an Anatolian Shepherd at the shelter. They said I couldn't have him because I didn't have a six foot fence around my property! How many people have a six foot fence around their property? Ostrich farmers, maybe? They wouldn't accept my electric containment. The funny part is, the sister in question made a statement to the fact, that since I didn't "vet" my dog every month, I couldn't afford a dog anyway! She called the humane society and told them this, so they offered the fence reason for my not being able to adopt the dog. Sorry, but if this is our humane society and the way they handle animals...well, they have some seriously twisted priorities!

Now, the same sister has 13 dogs, 9 of which are in a small pen with electric at the bottom to keep them from digging out. They walk daily on their own feces....lots of it!, never get out of the pen, have a tarp stretched over one end for shade, have a continual infestation of worms, skin conditions, etc. Their water is tepid, dirty and always frozen in the winter. One small beagle was tied to a heavy logging chain and isolated from the others. He was 13 years old. I asked her why he had that logging chain on his neck and she told me that this is what he was "used to where he lived before". He died right there on that chain. Alone, way off in the corner of a field.

My dogs, on the other hand, have approx. 1/2 acre of ground on which to run, they have a lounging mattress in an open-sided shed, a heated water bucket for winter, dog houses with memory foam/cedar chip/straw beds. They get daily socialization with the family, are never tied, fresh water, shade trees, cool green grass on which to roll and lay, and their feces are deposited up in the orchard where they only go to make a deposit. They get "vetted" when they are ill which is never, they get wormed, vaccinated and injuries are taken to the vet if they cannot be attended to at home.

Now, tell me why the humane society continues to give this woman animals for fostering and adoption? This is not isolated to this county....she had the same situation at the county in which she used to live. BOTH humane societies helped this woman hoard, overfeed, but neglect, animals of all shapes and sizes. They also seize other people's animals on her say so! If I had the faintest belief that an organization like this could, or would, help stop this cycle, I just might appeal to them. THEY are the bad guys!

Yeah, but most humane societies really don't do much of any actual checking before they adopt out animals (aside from sometimes calling a vet reference). So they very well might not actually know where the animals are going aside from taking the adopter's word for things.

Whereas, if they get a complaint they *have* to go there and actually SEE the place.

It seems worth at least *trying*.

Best wishes,

Pat

BeeKissed pat is right they usually look at the papers filled out by the adoptors and take their word for it. They usually are not staffed enought to go out and check the properties where these people live and plan to house the animals. We have 5 full time investigators to work the whole state of Missouri and that is 116 counties...
Now if you would have told them that you had a 6 foot high fence enclosing your 5 acres they would have probily let you have that shepard. And Your sister has not been telling them the truth completely about what goes on and dies on her property. If you take them photos and file complaints. As Pat said they have to go check it out I would be sure to tell them the situation of the local law enforcement connection that is not looking serouisly at the situation. I am so sorry that this is not happening here in Missouri where I know I could get some action taken.... If you want PM me with the county they live in a general discription and I will contact the WV Humane Society Myself. I can only hope I can do something from this distance. But not seeing anything myself and not knowing the names or location it will be diffacult to give them real evidence. Believe me if you can't get statements, complaints, photos and vet reports sometimes it is very hard to get a Proscuter to file charges. I will try to help as much as I can if you wish to give them details and file complaints to back up what their investagators can get. Just let me know what you want to do...

I use to have a beagle and they are wonderful dogs... Just the thought of that poor thing dieing in a corn field alone on log chain makes me sick. And that Nasty Man with the poor little foal and broken leg just makes me want to break his legs. Those type of people are why I try to do what I do. 1 animal at a time does make a difference.. Sorry I get caught up on a soap box with that sometime. Let me know what you wish to do...

I might place a few calls next week about the horse guy. The sister thing is a more delicate matter. I know its anonymous but it still feels funny. Also, in a community like this, NOTHING remains anonymous...I'm a nurse...I know! All the personal medical information that there are laws against disclosing, is repeated each night on the phone lines, the scanners, etc. So, that one will have to require more planning. From what I can read on that link site, they have the WV cruelty laws outlined and none of them mention animals being kept on 5 ft. of manure each day. They do mention food, shelter and medical care. In these counties it is not required to have shelter for horses and cattle, but in the county in which I used to live it was required. So the laws must differ county to county.

I will attempt to help these animals but I don't hold much hope for them. I would, however, like to somehow keep my sister from being able to keep animals of any kind for awhile....they have spent every spare dime on this habit. They have been down to $40 before and had to buy feed on their account at SS. They just returned from AK and OH, where they acquired two black hogs and another Highland bull. They are now traveling across the country to feed this compulsion! They had to use CRP checks to pay for that little mission. The saga continues...

Keep in mind these people just inherited $55,000 and had it spent in two weeks on animals, feed, broken down farm equipment and more animals. They still do not have plumbing, any kind of toilet whatsoever (she has been squatting in the dog pens or in the stream nearby), no adequate fencing, no barns, no graze, no furniture (its all been chewed up by dogs and had to be thrown out). This hoarding habit is taking every spare dime. When they run out, the animals take the brunt of it. The first winter there, the cattle had no hay..."they can eat multiflora rose, that's why we got them", the first summer they were drinking their own urine out of their tracks as there wasn't any money to get water to their field.

I'll have to just be careful on that one. I have to still live here. I'd prefer to do so without being harassed by relatives who have family in the local law enforcement. Not to mention, her husband is my son's recruiter for the military. Touchy thing...

I understand it is a hard thing to do and it sounds to me that they are not living in a very healthy situation either. I hope they don't have children.. If they do then the Heath Department needs to know... I hope you can get something done about the skum bag manure man. safe housing also means sanitary.. 2-3 foot of fecus is unhealthy.. I just dealt with a case of a dead horse, 8 in very thin shape and 1 in a round pen with 2-2 1/2 foot of old manure he was standing on. The owner had 24 hours to dispose of the dead horse, and to get good quailty hay and clean water for all. Then 72 hours to get the poor boy who is also badly foundered on the front. 72 hours to get vet exam and a farrier out to treat the poor boy. Then to house him in a clean stall with thick soft footing, good hay and water. He has 2 weeks to get all horses wormed and seen by a vet. He also knows that charges are pending, So the sooner he makes improvements the less chance he will have 15 charges filed against him. He will be lucky to come out with just 3 charges.
As far as housing for cows and horses in Missouri shelter for them includes wind breaks and shade trees. As long as they can get out of the harsh winter winds and have shade from the hot sun that is considered shelter for them. My horses stand out in the rain not the barn most the time.

I hope for the best in this situation for you and the animals I will pray things get much better, for the animals, you and for your sister's sake. Karan

As hard as it may be some times you just have to do the right thing.Being silent about it is not helping her or the animals and it seems to be only getting worst.
Im sure your sister will be mad at whom ever turned her in but it seems like its the best and right thing to do.

She can't change what she refuse to acknowledge, with out intervintion she will spiral out of control worse than she is.
You can get them the help they need, they wont thank you thats for sure but knowing you did the right thing for the animals should be enough.

Try some of that tough love stuff....

oh boy I guess Im a hoarder too but I will be cured come fall when the turkeys are full grown. well untill I get a bator that Im asking for for xmas
