what do you do to ward off predators

We dont do much in the line of warding off predators, we just shoot them when they come around. Our barns are predator proof for the most part, in the summer when we have meat chickens we keep a radio on in the coop at night, and often during the day when the girls are out in the run. Anything besides a weasel will have a very hard time getting into our coops, so if we see anything coming its "get the gun!!"

I thought about a solar fence charger until I saw the price. I'm an electrical engineer and have started working on a design of my own that I could make fairly cheap. Lots of old TVs on the curb these days so I should be able to scrounge a flyback transformer and most of the parts to complete the 'zapper' section. The flybacks typically produce ~6-10KV which gives a very nasty shock. Yes, that's experience talking. Lots of outlets for low cost solar panels these days too. The biggest expense will probably be the battery.

Radios are a good option to...plus I've heard the chickens like the music.
