What do you do with an unwanted roo?

I usually give them away for free on CL because I don't like processing them myself. If it's a rare breed of chicken, I'll specify that I'm looking for a home that would make him a breeding rooster, but the vast majority of the time, I'm okay with the idea that they will be food for someone.

I would never be able to butcher one of mine (that's just me, I know lots of folks do). Whenever I have accidentally (when ordering pullets) gotten a roo, I have never had any problem finding it a home. I advertise as "pet only" but what really happens to them is anyones guess. But I do try to find them good homes....... I do know where 2 of my roos are and I know they have good homes.

If you are talking Binghamton NY that is the area that I am in as well, I have had tons of luck giving them away on Craigslist. I actually just sold a 5 week old BO roo for 3$ about an hour ago. Try to sell it at first and if that dosnt work just give it away. You will only be out a few bucks and not have to worry a rooster crowing will upset your neighbors.

We eat them. Two in the freezer right now. And Lavendar was such a mean little beast, I am going to enjoy him much better in a stew than when he was alive.

I do NOT put my unwanted roosters up on Craigslist, because -- at least here in west Tennessee -- the cock fighters hang around Craigslist and other places where free or inexpensive roosters are likely to be advertised.


They will tell you whatever you want to hear, just to get their hands on your rooster.


Cockfighting is pure torture of a poor rooster. No bird I am responsible for is going to end up in a cockfight.
