What do you do with your chickens when they are done laying?

I need to say something here - I really appreciate how civil this thread has been. People just sharing what they do and no judgemenalism on either side. It's been a pleasure to read.

I've not had to deal with this yet, but have a friend w/50 or 60 birds and he takes his old Layers to a livestock auction periodically and they turn into more chicken feed. I have 4 chickens and am limited as the city doesn't recognize chicken math so if I want eggs something must done when the time comes.

We love our Silkies. They are fun to watch and the eggs are a bonus. They give us pleasure.
Just like a dog or a cat or any other pet.

They can live with us for life. We have 18 hens and 3 Roosters. God Bless them. Regards, Aria

We got our first chicks in May and are very attached to them. Honestly, as others have said, they are more like pets than food producers. The eggs are really a bonus. And, as with every pet I've ever had, I dread the thought of anything happening to them. It is our intention to keep the ladies as bug control specialists until they die of natural causes, hopefully as very very old biddies. We may add to the flock in a year or two, but these gals are here for good.

I agree. I asked the question and it has been nice to hear what others are doing. No judgement either way.

Yeah even if you don't agree with someone else, everyone is different, everyone does things differently. And everyone has them for different reasons. So there really is no point in judging anyone.

I keep mine until they die. I don't do well raising my animals for meat. If they live here they die here in retirement.

I would have a BYC mutiny if I killed Stan the Man!

Seriously, I'm not in dire need of protein at this time so I have no desire to eat my birds. If I name them, I don't eat them. Although in the past I have raised chickens for meat. I didn't process them though.
