What do you get when you cross....

That EE over BR will produce black sex link chicks. Barring is a sex-linked trait, which means the genetics are NOT the same for BR roo / other hen vs BR hen / other roo.

What is the possibility of some chicks ending up sterile? Mostly the Golden Buff chicks since they are hybrids and the rooster is most likely a mutt?

I also have an EE rooster that bred to 1 EE hen and 5 Barred Plymouth Rock hens? Out of 14 eggs only 8 hatched & survived, almost all of them look different! Some a smoke color and couple looked barred and even one or two black one. I can really tell who the straight EE, he almost looks like a hawk lol. Can I tell right away but their color what sex they are, and what do I do about breeding them back? I was going to try to find a Barred Plymouth Rock rooster to bred them to but I am not finding alot of info online,,thank you! I

Here's my rooster,,he has a beautiful golden color to him and would hate to get rid of him!

Here is momma with her 2nd clutch this year with a couple of the crossed chicks

This is a chick for the first clutch this year..and he is a rooster,,the other two with this clutch were not barred but were both attacked and killed by the dog next door :( One was brown like its mother and the other was black,,we think both were pullets thou

Your Easter egger rooster over your barred rock hens gave you sex link chicks! Chicks with a white or creamy spot on the head when they hatched are males, and will be barred to some extent. chicks with a solid colored head will be females, usually mostly black but with some other colors leaking through. That spot on the head can be hard to see if the chick down isn't black, and it goes away as they feather in.

I've had a lot of fun mixing EE and barred birds. What you do about breeding back is up to you and what you want in chicks. I'm fine with breeding back to the same rooster a time or two--I just culled my 4 year old rooster that had given me many, many chicks. I'm trying to decide which young guy to keep now--I just need to decide what characteristics I want in my next year's chicks. There's really no right or wrong answer, just whatever I want.

I did get one really pretty hen who was the smoke color you described--I don't know how she turned out this color, but she's so pretty!

Wish I would have asked before they got their feathers in lol they are now 2 months old. Now that I know a little more I can look at them better. One did develop a crossed beak,,bottom is straight and top is crossed over. It is a lil smaller but seems to be eating and drinking ok. I hope it was just a freak thing and won't show up in future generations if it ends up being a hen. I was thinking of crossing back to a rock just so I can keep the egg production up but actually me EE is the best layer of them all,,never missed a day til molting lol I can't say that for the rocks lol

Check out what she gave me this week lol just measured it 3in x 2 in and over 5 oz!! has to be a twin yolk or even triple!!

So if they're feathered out now, the barred birds are male and the non-barred birds are female.

I agree on the Easter eggers, mine have always been really good, consistent layers. Lots of folks on this board have had them lay very late, or sporadic, but I've always had good production. Plus, I love colored eggs and puffy cheeks!

I'm really interested in this cross! I hope to hatch some eggs sometime but I don't have space yet. Moving in the summer though. I would guess the offspring have good temperament s and laying ability, too.

That red EE rooster over golden buff (red sex link) hens will most likely give you chicks that are solid red like him, red with white, or solid white.
I just butchered the 4 roosters from this cross, but my roo is dark mahogany red. I ended up with the following:
-solid red cockeral with no muff, wattles, single comb
-solid red cockeral with no muff, no wattles, pea comb
-red and white cockeral with muff, wattles, pea comb
-red and white cockeral with no muff, wattles, single comb
-white pullet with single comb, no muff
As you can see traits are all over the board, oh and all of them had yellow legs even though their father had dark willow legs.
Here are pics of 2 males and the female
