What do you raise your chickens for?

I keep chickens primarily for eggs and meat. After eating our home grown chickens, it's hard to buy it at the grocery store. I also prefer the look and taste of farm fresh eggs over store eggs. I enjoy watching them, too. They can be quite entertaining.

I keep chickens for 3 different reasons.

First of all: They're GREAT pets. I have many different breeds in my mixed flock and they are all very friendly. My top breeds for pets are Buff Orpingtons, Silkies, Easter Eggers, and Black Australorps.

Secondly: We started with chickens because we wanted eggs (as many chicken addicts do) while we do enjoy getting eggs from our flock, we consider them a bonus My top breeds for eggs are Leghorns, Sex Links, and Easter Eggers.

Thirdly: For show and breeding. I keep Ayam Cemani's and I am working on breeding them- and I am really enjoying it

My parents got us started with raising chickens back in 2007 when my 2 brothers and I were still young. We continue raising chickens for eggs but I have started to raise broilers for meat for both us and our pets(Cats/Dogs).

I was 10 in 2007 when we started, my younger brother was 7, and our older brother was 14. All 3 of us were very mature for our age at the time so we helped take care of the chickens and helped with collecting eggs everyday.

I've become responsible for taking care of them during the weekdays now as our parents both work until they get home at 3:30pm and 6pm. I decided to be the one who buys the new chicks as my parents need to focus on the bills. My older brother has begun to help pay most of the bills as he works too.

I also plan on selling some eggs once all our chickens are laying next year. I'm getting a few more chicks this Friday to add.

For pets, and an easy chore. I was a farm kid so I MUST have some kind of livestock related chore or life just doesn't feel right. My aging body could no longer keep up with horses so I switched to chickens. They are great entertainment and great pets and their upkeep is easy on my body.

For pets. We don't eat the eggs but what I don't hatch I give to friends who love to hatch them too. I haven't had a loss yet but I know it will happen one day and I will be devastated when it happens.
