I lived on a farm for a long time, and miss it terribly. I wanted to keep chickens for eggs, so my son's senior project was researching the chicken industry and building me a coop. I got 4 chicks and still have an original one 3 years later after the mastiffs were taught not to catch them. I realized how fun they were as they followed me around the yard and talked to me. Then the dogs didn't get fleas in the summer. Then my fruit trees started growing like crazy. Then, when I let them into the garden to clean up, by this time there were 10 or so, they tilled it for me. Then, I started to compost, and they turned it for me!
Now the dogs nap with the chickens and keep the chicks warm on those chilly mornings, one of the hens loves the dogs. They are part of the family.

I got them for eggs for my dogs and myself. I got 4, thought that would be a perfect number. Then 2 turned out to be boys. Well I wasn't getting eggs from them and in the process I got attached. So I went and got 4 more girls(thank that man above that they all stayed girls). Had to seperate the boys(one is living in the house until I create his area outside). Now the eggs don't even matter, they are full blown pets and part of the family. I never saw that one coming, but they are really intriguing creatures. I can watch them for hours.
