What do you think, barred rock roo or mix?

Not trying to be mean here Ayschmidt but Ameraucana's and Easter Eggers are not the same breed of bird. You have to remember that the vast majority of Ameraucana chickens out there are actually Easter Eggers and not pure bred anythings but a mix. 90% of the time they are any breed mixed with a chicken that has the blue egg laying gene (Ameraucana, or Araucana ). So crossing an EE with another breed would not make the resulting chicks half Ameraucana and half the other breed, it's impossible. Crossing an EE with a pure bred would result in a mutt-mutt-mutt pretty much.(.lol. Confusing...) that could show a vast mix of traits coming from 3 different breeds or more. Here is a link that will help you understand the difference between Araucana/Ameraucana/Easter Egger chickens. http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2011/09/ameraucana-easter-egger-or-araucana.html smile : )

I get it and I really am not all that savy on that breed and I do not own any of my own. I always thought that EE and Ameracauna were the same thing. All I am saying is that my brother has what I guess are EE and the resulting chicks from her and their BR rooster look just like the rooster pictured and our rooster Rocky. I was never saying that is what her rooster is and I quite frankly I have no idea but that rooster and our rooster look about identical and that is what I was told that he is. EE and BR cross.

Again, I appreciate everyone's input :) assuming he is a BSL or BR cross can anyone tell me if he would produce offspring with barred markings when mated with a non-barred hen such as a RIR or red sexlink? I also have EE's.

I thought that only worked when the hen was the one with the barred gene?? I really don't know and am now curious myself.

If you mate this rooster to a non-barred hen, half of his offspring will be barred, regardless of gender. Depending on the hen, you can get some funky, pretty colors, and the barring can be very subtle and hard to see when they're grown. Chicks that hatch with a white/cream spot on their heads are barred, but sometimes it's hard to see if the chick's down is pretty light.
I had a BSL roo as my main guy for a few years. I bred him to my EE and my EE/brown leghorn crosses, among others. I got some pretty birds....

I think this was my bsl roo over my red sex link hen. I have no other white gened birds in my flock.

These are all out of ee or ee/leghorn hens

these hens are all barred, even though it's hard to see on some. The blue girl you can see it a little better since she's molted into her big girl feathers, but it's still very subtle. I'm thinking to put her under a pure Ameraucana rooster and see if I can get some sex link babies.

Donrae, thanks for the info and pictures! That is what I needed to know. Beautiful chickens! I really like the pretty colored mixed breeds :) maybe I will try hatching some this year.
