What do YOU think make great Free Range breeds?

Search in the directories of Breeders Clubs, search this forum, ask around or check the Wanted section, look through Auctions, etc

Join the SPPA for only $15 a year. You'll receive the SPPA Breeders Directory which is published every other year. It is the largest Breeders Directory of Rare Breeds published in the US and Canada. Also, you'll receive 4 lengthy Bulletins each year that focus on the history, raising and breeding rare breeds of poultry.

It's a real deal! Just ask many on this site.

Seems like Ive been here before but can't remember so..... Im going to say Speckled Sussex my girls do just fine and they can hide like no other! Mine are very difficult to see if standing next to a tree or in the brush they blend right in!

I live next to state land reserved for hunting, deer and turkey. THat means I have coyote cruising thu ( a new face stopped yesterday) and crows and hawks. I also have 2 young children (7&9) And I have plenty of land, some pasture, mostly wooded. I wanted egg layers primarilty, friendly because of my kids, tough enough to cope with hawks and coyote, the right colors to be missed by the hawks.

production reds__tough ( peck when in nest box), dk color to blend in in the shade, mod-gd forager

silver specked hamburg-- a tough rooster who took over the top position, never attacked me or my kids, quick spry, black and white so easy to spot but very alert.

specled sussex--my kids love 2 of mine, very good foragers, great camouflage color

buff orpingtons-- docile, not the best camo color, noted for being the first to be picked off bc of docileness, down the drive foraging further than others

blk sexlinks--they don't visit, kids don't gravitate to them they don't forage; one rooster is aggressive to my kids, the other is a sweetie pie they tote around.

austrolorp--ditto

EE--run to forage first thing in the morning, good camo, easy going, not friendly but manageable

marans--run off to forage with the EE and BO

My favorite overall is the speckled sussex. But they all work together--one sounds the warning and everyone reacts! Even the BBW turkeys ran for cover. Coyote in the yard yesterday, a deer today.

I'll be adding buckeyes.
