What % do you tip when you eat out??

That's not true.

Some people just don't tip.

Karaoke night people were notoriously bad tippers. One night I waited on fourteen karaoke enthusiasts who all drank nothing but water with extra lemon for three hours. Many, many refills. At the end of the night, one woman hands me a buck.

Then there was the guy who removed a dollar from my tip every time I turned down one of his propositions, then chased me down the hall yelling, "I ain't never had no yellow-hair!" Fun times.

A typical section in a chain restaurant is four tables for dinner. The server makes her money by turning tables over as quickly as possible. Most family style restaurants the servers are not making tons of cash. They're not typically on the floor for a full 8 hours. They rarely have a full section the whole night, and they usually have to do side work or chores that take up to an hour that they don't really get paid for. Tending bar is a good gig. They usually get paid better than server wage plus tips and there isn't as much running or harassment.

I've never worked as a server, but I've known enough to know how hard they work, and for lousy pay. I'll generally tip 20%, unless the service is awful. If the server was truly awesome, I'll tip more.

I NEVER blame a waitress for bad FOOD.. Its not her fault. I actually feel bad for the poor things... people get all pissy with them like its their fault the cook sucks. Makes no sense at all...
But you can bet if shes a BAD waitress..she dosent get a much of a tip at all.. Maybe a few bucks.
I also dont blame a waitress if they are understaffed and shes running her fool head off and cant get to me as quickly as i'd like.... again... NOT her fault.
But if i see her standing around gabbing when i need a drink re-fill or something..... yup... small tip.

I'm not.. i'll stick with the recommended 20%.. i'm not out to impress anyone...

BUT, I did give $40 to an exceptional server, when my meal cost $9.

Won't beat you up....it's just the way I do it. If the server is standing at the bar talking up the bartender and I'm eating a jalepeno burger...I want my water refilled. If I have to walk up to the bar to ask the server AND the bartender if I can get a water refill, don't expect a tip. At all.
