What do you use for a brooder?

Big U-haul Cardboard box inside a dog pet carrier. Light on one end held up by wire,
Feed and water on the other. I put a small separator in the middle so if they want to cool down.

I have a medium sized rabbit cage from Feeders that I keep the little buggers in --- inside the house until they seem a bit crowded.... then it's out to the coop into a metal dog kennel with a heat light... we remove the plastic bottom on the dog kennel and put in lots of shavings.... seems to have worked great for us....

When they're bigger we just start leaving the door to the kennel open then remove it when they no longer go in....

This of course was during the summer but I've got questions now that it's colder and we went w/o electricity for a week and put the plastic bottom in the kennel and brought the 7 wk old chicks indoors again... now I want to move them out to the coop....

Many things work really well. but a caution. Make sure the bottom is good and flat so your waterer will not lean sideways. I had one more time to keep it level. that was the worst part. I had a plastic walmart chest. The bottom was NOT flat. Jean

I came here in possible search of a new way to set up a brooder but after taking a look at all the ways folks have theirs set up....I am pleased with my current set up.....a 100 gallon poly stock tank with 3 foot high sides which I fashioned a poultry wire cover for with duct tape all the way around the edges and the lamp hangs from a rope in my garage over it and I can raise or lower it according to the digital thermometer inside the brooder and the chicks can live inside of it for up to 5 weeks if needed.

Holds up to 10 chicks. I take them outside into a large wire cage on nice days.
