What do you use for brooders?

Usually a rubbermaid storage container. But right now, I have 3 polish chicks set up in a 10 gallon aquarium.

I put 2 Rubbermaid totes together, side by side, with a cut-out door opening. That way they can get away from any potential bully. I put food and water on both sides. I have hardware cloth on top, and lay the heat lamp on that. Each side has a heat lamp at the end, and they can go to the cool end, if they are too warm.

After a week or so, I move them into my huge 3 foot tall (6' x 8') cardboard brooder, for another 2 - 4 weeks (for winter), in the attached garage. I made a "door," on it, which has a "hinge," where the cardboard box bends. I lay cardboard on the floor area also. It's all free! I have saw-horses holding a 2x4 for the heat lamps. They are secured in place with one of those plastic pieces used in electrical stuff. Then, they go outside into the brooder built into the breeder barn.
You can see a blue tote with heat lamp on hardware cloth in the background here ...

I use the rubber ones... in my house. I have never had a problem with the heat. I use screws to secure the heat lamp in its position.

I've used:
a fishtank
rubber totes
4x4' wooden crate
rabbit cages - (I attach cardboard to the sides of the cage to prevent drafts, put hay on the bottom to prevent drafts from below and hang the brooder lamp above.)

My absoulute favorite brooder is a good broody hen

Depends on the weather, if cold, I use rubbermaid totes in the house, in a pinch I have used the Dog Whelping box made of wood. Hubby and I built a double wood brooder in the barn, each side is 4 x 4 and is ventilated. We have to move it from the barn and will insulate it and it will be used outside underneath the overhang on our shed.

Here at the home stead I have a roll of 2x4 wire. I use it to make a big circle, inside the circle I have rolled card-board, the stuff they use to wrap the floor displays in grocery stores, I place that on the inside of the wire circle, I then place a bar threw the wire for my heating lamp, It allows me to raise it up and down as needed, It is also big enough for the chicks to get in or out of the heat as needed. I do place about 8 inches of bedding in before I place chicks.
The less stress the better. Food and water are in before the chicks.

Rabbit crate with a grid over the top of the tray so the poopies fall through. Seems the grid
really makes their legs strong and seems to help a little with splayed legs and such.
