What do you use for brooders?

Rubbermaid bins but at first I put them in an aquarium brooder until they are a little more mobile and know where the find the food and water.

Ummm - we use one of our bathtubs. DS is not overly happy - "You know you're a redneck when . . . you have chicks in the bathtub."

Ya know I was just thinking (dangerous I know), but if you got an old used bathtub, you could set it on legs in your garage or back room, run a piece of pipe from the drain to the outside. Use it as a brooder and then it would be easy to clean, running the water to the outside. I'll bet a fiberglass tub would work best as they aren't that heavy. They would probably work good for a broody hen set up too.

My aunt uses an old bathtub for a horse trough! It works great.

For brooders I have: a medium sized dog crate with cardboard zip-tied to the sides to prevent drafts and a heat lamp. Up to week 4 or 5.
A large whelping pen with heat lamp. Weeks 4-6
Large rubbermaid tubs.....leave the tops off for ducks, cut the middle of the top off and attach poultry netting for chicks. These are kept in 70, then 60 degree rooms (around 7-8 weeks) to get them feathered out for the move to the coop.

They do have a heat lamp in the coop also.

I use a rubbermaid tub with papers and pine shavings and I have a vintage floor lamp that has a pole on a base and the light part slides up and down to raise or lower the temperature. When I just have a couple chicks, I use a small aquarium with the same floor light. It's plastic and I used a giant paper clip heated over a flame to punch out holes for feeders and their water bottle. They "love" their water bottle. Some find it and start using it in seconds. They stand around the tub like a bunch of bottle calves and poke their beak in and drink it up. I use the waffle type rubber drawer liner in the bottom so there's no slipping around and I think it's the perfect footing.

I have 3 tiny Serama chicks in it right now and moved my 2 older Serama chicks into a wire cage. It's still far too cold to put them outside so I cut a piece of cardboard to cover the wire bottom and put a piece of the rubber drawer liner on top of that and have a heat lamp on top. The poop seems to dry pretty fast and I just vacuum it up using the vacuum hose with a brush attachment. They don't even mind me vacuuming with them in there.

Here's the aquarium I fixed up. It sets on an end table in the living room so my chicks can watch TV

The chicks inside had outgrown it but I put them in for fun. It's perfect for those smaller bantam breeds like my Serama's. I did put pine shavings in but they were more problem than just the rubber flooring and this is cleaner too. It's hard to see in the photo but the feeders and water bottle are attached from the outside.
