Make sure you're well ventilated if you're using baking soda & vinegar. Sounds nice & safe, but that's what I use to cull sick chicks.

When you mix the two, you get carbon dioxide gas -- enough of it in a small area, and you'll (or the chickens'll) asphyxiate.

I wouldn't have worried too much, though, if you weren't using it with them in a small space, though. Carbon dioxide is somewhat heavier than air and will settle, so unless you had the chicken contained, its head would likely still be in sweet air.

Oh, i did it in my kitchen and then i washed it right when i saw it was doing nothing. and dumped the rest down the sink with water. WOW, i am so glad you told me that i will not do that again.

I was thinking on the peroxide what do you think.

you need to breed the silver gene in the strain of silkies

that said the new hatched chicks will have a grey color to the down and will molt into the whitest white chick

your strain has the yellow gene

generally there is nothing less than bleach that will get yellow out of the foot feathers

also do not feed corn to the white birds as it and milo discolor white birds

any questions email me

I DON'T KNOW my chicks are born with a greyish color. The yellow i talk about is from poop.

She's trying to tell you the genetic basis as to why you are seeing the yellow coloring in your birds. It is best to not get snooty with those who are attempting to help.

By selecting for birds that show less yellow, you will help eliminate the problem in future offspring.

Breeding for the silver gene helps decrease yellow in feathers.

The thing is , is that i did not even post any pics of my chicks so how can some one tell me that my chicks are to yellow.

The yellow that i talk about is yellowing from poop,
I am sorry if i took that the wrong way, and i am sorry that i was not clear on where the yellow was from. That just hurt when some one talks about my chicks when they have not even seen them.

the chicks with silver grey down are the ones that WILL NOT GET YELLOW FEATHERING IN THE WHITE

this genetic make up has the silver gene in white

simply was telling you what white breeding is all about

also if the foot feathering is yellow then you should keep them from walking on the soil and getting yellow tinge to the white feathers

as for if they are show quality then you are the winner
i was not judging your birds
just telling you some 45 yrs breeding white birds and knowing what in chicks makes the whitest bird

as it does not have the yellow trait in the adults

I never said that they were not standard
and yes I read that the birds foot feathering is yellow

it would have to be from walking on soil or dirty bedding

keeping white birds clean is an art in maintaining good clean bedding and so they don't get stained
generally the stains are dark not yellow

I kept my show birds on wire flooring and never had any problems
but then my chicks some times came out pure silver down
which is a blessing to any white breeder

just telling you about the strain of birds one can get

by the by what color is the down of your chicks?

where did you buy the chicks from when you started?

just trying to give some idea what one has to breed to get the pure white
sorry if I hurt your feelings
not intended to do that
any other questions email me

I am sorry for that the wrong way,
I do take everybody advice.
it is just that when i read that it felt kinda like some one telling me that i dont know what i am doing.
I even admitted in the thread that i laked on them a bit.
and yea my hubby is working on making wire bottoms for me so that there feet are not in there bedding.

I guess it is my fault for not stateing where the yellow came from.
