What does a prolapsed vent look like?

Looks like it might be a prolapse, just a mild one. Here's what I would do ~ gather together an old, clean rag soaked in warm water, a tube of Preparation H, and a pair of surgical gloves from the drugstore (ALWAYS keep some of these around!).

When you're ready, grab your hen and set her on a box, crate or low perch so she's facing away from you, and keep your left (or non-dominant) arm around her front so she can't walk or fly off. Using the other hand, gently sponge off her bottom with the rag to clean things up and relax the vent. You might even hold the rag gently pressed on the vent for a few minutes if you can. Then gently apply a bit of Prep-H to the exposed areas (don't go inside). You will have to use your own judgment on whether you try to gently press the exposed parts back in, but you may not have to if the swelling subsides with the use of the Prep-H.

Good luck, and keep us posted!

Jenski-THANK YOU! Not only is your advice going to be easy to follow, but the pictures and captions were hysterical! Well, the pictures were kinda gross, but the captions were funny.

My prolapsed hen is still laying. I am guessing I need to make her quit for a while, right?
