What does a trill "Tr.tr.tr.tr.tr.trTrTrTrTr" mean?

I tried that with my flock and they looked at me like I was an idiot.

Its a warning. My Ricky does it to me when I get too close to "HIS" chickens. He's usually up on the rafters or outside the run when he does it to be but it is definitely a warning.

I've told my grandson that if Ricky is down out of the rafters and he does that noise, that he is to quickly leave the area because that means that Ricky's upset.

My roo does like a RAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaa when he sees a sky predator. If I go out and do it he will repeat it and we will have shouting...or RAAAAAing matches at each other. The lil cockrels I have do it at pigeons, doves, sparrows you name it.

this typing out sounds is hilarious!! but I wanted to ask the very SAME question just didn't know how... my little 5 week old bantam cochin does is when they are settling down to go to sleep. the other 2 are peeping away loudly and he is making that trtrtrtrtrtrr sound like "ssshhh settle down and be quite" and put his head over on them. so cute just curious why he is doing that!?

There was an article in Backyard Poultry about the different sounds a chicken makes depending on sex and age. Here is the link, the title is Fowl Language:

It is by Gail Damerow, she wrote/edited Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens.

Maybe this would be helpful? I get the issues from our library.

Rats sad
The link wouldn't open that story
Guess I'll have to try the library

Yeah, I tried making some of the noises at my girls a few time...they looked at me like "What are you trying to say, you poor dear? Your chickenspeak is terrible" Sometimes it works though, when I find a tasty earthworm that they haven't noticed yet, I point and make the "appropriate" noises and they'll come over and get it.
