I use an indoor guinea pig/rabbit cage that i got on ebat for £10. It's perfect. Front opening so they dont get spooked as easily. A heat lamp reflector can be placed ontop so no need to hang it. Fab.
we got a kit from mypetchicken that had everything; food, heat lamp and bulb, feeders, waterers, wall panels, bedding etc for $75 but was well worth getting the right stuff.
First brooder was a pond insert and the second one is an old mail tote. The pond insert has now become the transitional brooder for the chicks that are 3 weeks old.
Quote: Why not try Waltz's Ark in Colorado? They raise their poultry naturally. Have quality birds. I am impressed by the breed type in their Sussex. http://www.naturalark.com/poultryforsale.html

We have a homemade one that we use. It has plywood on the bottom one-third and chicken wire the rest of the way up with a chicken wire door on top. It is on wheels so we can roll it outside when it gets warmer and the chicks are getting feathered. When that is full we use plastic totes or whatever we have around that is not being used. Just something so that we can keep a constant comfortable temperature without being drafty.
We are using a watermelon box on a pallet from the grocery store for free. 30+ inch walls should keep them in for now Working great so far but they only arrived yesterday so time will tell if it holds up.
