What Does everyone think about Silkies?

Pah they're not fragile. People TREAT them like they're fragile.

Mine free range on three acres with full sized large fowl. No problem. If I want to show them I have to pen em up to clean them up and fix their feet feathers. Not showing yet, out they go.

Deciding something is precious and fragile tends to lead to that truth.

Deciding the horrid little beasts look really hilarious out there dancing with the big birds and foraging for themselves leads to a different conclusion.

I have Delawares and Partridge and Barred Rocks and Bourbon Red Turkeys, big birds, active birds. I started with Sizzles and Silkies for broodies and ended up keeping them for themselves.

They look silly, are nice to hold and pet and actually handle life happily and in their own way quite well on free range.

The horrid little things attach themselves to you without warning and end up staying. Even Laura - who has NOTHING to do with the birds, says don't sell all the sizzles and silkies that they're fun to watch. (Look like feather dusters assaulting the meadow.)

Wouldn't it be a boring world if everything and everyone was identical. If there were only one breed of chicken and only one colour. Ever read The Lathe of Heaven?

I dislike orpingtons and leghorns and RIR, but that doesn't mean that they shouldn't exist, or that someone who likes those breeds is wrong. Simply different tastes and opinions.

Like my start on a different pet variety of Sizzles, my little guy Black or Blue bleeding red , is NOT correct for color, but it's a spectacular color and I'll make time and room to try to solidify it and breed it because yeah, I can't show him and his breeder is pulling her hair out trying to get the color out of her lines, but doesn't mean I can't cherish him.

I like a variety. I don't think anyone is wrong for the breeds they choose or don't.

If I didn't try new breeds then I wouldn't meet new friends. You really don't know a breed til you've lived with a number of them. I tried out Delawares, they're staying.

So are the Sizzles and Silkies and Rocks.

Each for different reasons.
