What does head shaking signify?

Well, I hog-tied the patient and looked in her deep, cavernous ears and then shined a search light down her throat, and all were pink, healthy-looking and normal in every respect.

I dumped some sample ear canal oil for itchy ears down her left ear, the one she always is scratching with her foot. So now I'm watching to see if that improves the head shaking. Maybe all it is is a case of itchy ear.

Thanks again for all the help. Chicken ears are awesome! And such cute, little pink, pointy tongues!

How did he do? Is he better? my rooster shakes his head all of the time and I'm trying to figure out if its normal or not.

She's still alive at age six and never had the head shaking return. Never rule out itchy ears when you have a chicken with head shaking.

My 6 mo old cockerel named Peep-Peep shakes his head when he hears a loud noise such as Rooroo, his dad, crowing near him... Not sure if that is normal or not?

Does Peep-Peep agree with me that Rooroo is too loud or something? :lau

Hello, I have an 18-week old easter egger who has been shaking her head a lot lately. She seems otherwise healthy. I looked briefly for mites this morning (didn't have my glasses on). It also looks like she's losing a bit of feathers around her face from the scratching. Perhaps it's allergies?

Thoroughly check her vent area and under her wings. They can be hard to see.Can you post a picture of her?

I cannot post pic right now... at work. Will check her more closely (with my glasses on) Was thinking about dusting the coop with DE.

I wouldn't do anything until you find mites on her.In my personal experience DE doesn't work at all.I like to use Gordon Permethrin spray its very effective and will last a long time too since the dilution is a lot.Or you can use Sevin Dust or Garden poultry spray.
