So my lowest ranking girl, Cordelia, recently started laying. She instantly went from untouchable to being my best friend. I absolutely love the change, but she has started being really involved when I clean the coop. She fusses around the best boxes, she parades back and forth in front of me on the roost bars, and she picks around wherever I'm trying to clean. She vocalizes a lot and does a lot of what I can only describe as a whine and I have no idea what it means. Is she just hanging out with me for fun? Or does she feel threatened that I'm close to the nest boxes and she's warning me? I usually just stop and love on her now and then, but if this is her feeling uncomfortable, I don't want to make her MORE uncomfortable and I'll just try to clean as quick as I can and get out.

Also, I know this isn't the place for this question, but while I'm posting, I've noticed a few of the girls are getting straight/messy bum feathers. Do I clean them or leave them?

I'm not too sure about this, but i definitely don't think she’s uncomfortable around you. She seems happy around you, and pretty comfortable!
As for the sound, it could be shes looking for some where to lay an egg. Hopefully someone else will know the answer!
You could clean their feathers, and i know some people clip them shorter, so the poop doesnt collect on them.

I agree, she just want to be with you. You will eventually understand what she wants.

Many years ago I had one like your. She was very personal, talk a lot and eventually I learned that she wanted to be hug and carried about. She was very smart and she was the leader of our flock.I really miss her.

She's looking for attention aka she wants to be your girlfriend. Does she squat for you? When my layers follow me around making little sounds for attention, that's what they're asking for.

As far as dirty butt feathers, I trim, I don't bathe. Trimming is much faster and longer lasting.
Four out of my five girls squat for me and let me hold and pet them. Thank you for the advice!

Aww she looks and sounds so cute!

She's just a curious, sociable chooky who likes being around you. I noticed that she squatted for you when you reached out to pat her.

She reminds me of my Clover (see my avatar). Sweet beautiful birdy.

That is a serious mask dang, I clean out my poop boards and do nothing like that. COPD here I come lololol

Indeed it is! I don't use any mask at all. In fact I don't even have a poop board - the poop falls straight onto the straw on the floor of the coop. When it builds up I just muck it out for compost and replace it with either fresh hay or dead tree leaves. Any residual poop on the perch is easily pushed off with a paint scraper.

SeriousDogFeet, why do you use such a heavy duty mask?
