After I had to euthanize my rooster, my hens make this noise in the morning (the sound the very first hen is making in this video)! You can also hear another hen making the same sound in the background right after the first hen quits. What does it mean?

Thanks folks!

My chickens always make that sound when they know I'm getting ready to let them out in the mornings. They start with it when they hear me coming. I have a rooster, so I doubt it's related to the loss of your rooster.

Cool! I was hoping it was a good sound! Even the most quiet hen does it (she seems to whisper it ...so cute! :) ). It sounded to me like impatience, but they always say it after i have already opened the coop door in the morning and they keep doing it when they are outside. Maybe they are expecting more treats from me? I have cut them back a little this past month or so ...

Yay! I found another link! It took me FOREVER to find the first one ... this is exactly how my girls sound after I've already opened the door of the coop and they are still roosting.

Mine do that, too, first thing in the morning when they see me. I think they're just very happy to be starting a new day, and they're pleased with themselves, to boot!

Thanks guys! This was great info! BTW, they just did the same vocalizations this morning because I didn't let them out in the yard today (it's storming all day) . . . they were so loud! LOL! I love these little ladies :)

It's funny because I never though much about that noise until seeing your question. I know they get so loud with it before I let them out, but it's not something I hear other times. Today I paid attention and they do still do it while they're piling out of the coop and waiting for me to open the runs to the outside. It must be some kind of "Let us out!" sound. Chickens are so fun!
