The village where I grew up, Stoddard, sits slightly higher than the river and the creek. We've never had any problem with flooding.

The terrain throughout the area is like you see in the photos. Southwest Wisconsin, Northeast Iowa, and Sotheastern Minnesota is an area referred to as the Coulee Region (French term for valley), the driftless area, or unglaciated area. When the glaciers from the last ice age receded from North America 12,000 years ago, they leveled the land and carried tremendous amounts of silt and rock (drift) that filled the low lying areas. The tri-state area I described was the only area untouched by the glaciers so the geology there is hundreds of thousands of years old. The creeks and rivers carved their way down through the earth creating valleys that were never filled by glacial drift. From valley to ridge throughout the area the terrain changes over 600' in elevation. It's like a mini mountain range...

Take a look at this terrain map. All the towns that are underwater right now were built in the valleys next to the Kickapoo River. Note the area from La Farge down to Gays Mills, the Kickapoo River valley. They continually rebuild in these areas flood after flood...

That is such a neat old barn!! A treasure to be sure! I am trying not to covet...

Yes, that's me.

I like that old barn. I'm not sure what it was used for, it only has four stalls downstairs, probably the smallest barn I've ever seen. Not quite a dairy farm unless they were just bringing them in for milking. Maybe just a few beeves for the family. Anybody have any ideas? Anyway, it's small enough to not break the bank fixing it up. I'd like to put new shingles on it, remove the steel, and put up board and batten siding.

Oh how I wish I lived on a big farm .... I'm trying to make my little farm right here !!

My southwest FL home...

don't feel bad masschix we just got the drywall done and we started 5 years ago hubby wouldn't let anyone else do anything. The building inspector made him hire a plumber which he convinced to just let him finish on the plumber's license and i hired the drywaller and he was mad but he got over it after he saw what a nice job the guy was doing.
All 2x6 construction with engineered trusses. It wouldn't have taken so long but DH had to work out of state for 2 years was only home 4 days a month
And wait till i post the pics we have the same taste in houses, lol
