What Duck breed is this??

As you can see the ducks are growing up fast. Should be flying away in a few months.
They are so adorable. Congrats for finding them and getting them this far. Are they the kind of ducks that walk along the shore and find food. Just thinking since they have long legs?

So are you going to release them? If so, have you limited their contact with you and allowed them to range outside so that they will know that they will need to look for food?

I am not familiar with waterfowl rehab but I know that with wild mammals, rehabers limit the interaction with them so that they retain a fear of humans. They keep their setting as natural as possible to give the animal a greater chance of surviving once released.

I know mallards in the wild stay with their moms for a while leaning survival skills.

I have been following a thread about a magpie goose on a thread on a different forum. It has been wonderful to see the gosling grow up- being a lone hatchling- it had a chicken and a ducklings for company growing up and the lady did what jdwntr has mentioned about having limited contact. Now fully grown the goose is leaving at times for a day or two - most likely joining up with a wild flock- but still returning home as well for the comfort and security of the home she was raised. Sucessful release really does depend on the birds having the ability to forage for there own food as well as recognise danger. It may still be worth finding a wild life rehaber you can talk to about them- and also to find out where a good place to release them may be. Some kind of sanctuary may be able to provide a kind of half way house for them to properly prepare them for release. They really are gorgeous looking babies- the colour pattern on their down is really incredible.

for those not familiar with these ducks here is an adult whistling who visits us along with the mallards and spoonbills. They have the most beautiful voice, and watch us do evening chores.

Wow gorgeous, being born and half raised in Fl. but living there most of my young life and camping too, I never saw a duck like that.

Lydia if you lived inland you wouldnt have seen many of the birds we have here. Love living out on the island and having the Space Center protected area to our north, it brings in all sorts of birds. North west pasture was full of storks, and multiple crane and other birds this morning.

Well I lived on the east coast in Jacksonville, but we did all our camping in the national forests. Thats so nice to see so many different bird species.

Yes they are black bellied whistling ducks. Such amazing coloring as ducklings. I love it!
