I noticed a few days ago that my duck had an swelled leg.. I took him to the vet. She gave me antibiotic shots and pain meds. I've been soaking it also.. Is there anything else I can do? The swelled area is HOT!.. Any home remedies? I don't want to euthanize him if I don't have too... He walks on it and eats/drinks..also.

To add.. they wasn't 100% sure if it was an injury/septic joint/or bumblefoot..🙄😔 I took him to the vet the next day whenever I found it.

(assuming it's bumblefoot) here's what I've found:
  • Administer proper antibiotics for a specified amount of days, as prescribed and instructed by your veterinarian.
  • Soak the lesion in warm water filled with Epsom salts to soften the exterior. This will allow you to drain the lesion with hydrogen peroxide, filling it with antibiotic ointment once the pus and debris is cleared.
  • Keep the bird separate from the time you find the disease and until treatment is complete, and provide them with adequate bedding.

Can we see a good pic of bottom of his foot? Your giving him injections? Could he have a injury? Keep him from using the leg while being treated small penned area, nice warm water therapy.

Are you giving him antibiotic? What is it? Looks like an infection in there or an injury. He couldn’t have gotten stepped on? Just trying to rule things out. Bottom of his feet don’t look bad.

As of right now.. I'm giving him an antibiotic shot in his upper part of his leg once a day! I'm also soaking it in salts.. I have an huge open fenced in area that has an creek running through it. Some idiot's up the road busted glass all in the creek and it flooded and it went straight into my ducks swimming area.🙄 We thought we got everything and we even scrapped the bottom of the pond for stuff.. He's a huge duck.. lol the biggest we have besides 18 more and some chickens and such... I really don't know what else to do. I'm having it cut open tomorrow from another vet to drain some of that infection out.. they thought septic joint or bumblefoot... but I've never had either of those with any of my ducks.. We have an large animal vet that sees cows and horses and such. They were the only vet that offered to see him and their opinion was to euthanize him..🤦‍♀️ I'm taking him to an vet that normally never sees farm animals but you can see it needs drained. It's really hot still.. I soaked it today but.. idk if that even does any good. He's eating and drinking fine.. theres a place on the side that looked cut in a way.. he threw an holy fit on me whenever I touched it. And I'm not for sure they just gave it to me whenever I paid my bill.. 😅 didnt even explain things. She did flush it out once..

Hopefully draining will help get it to healing. That along with the antibiotic your giving him. Let us know how he does after the vet works on him. Is the swelling soft like fluid is in it or hard?
