I thought Cherokees did the trail of tears. Also the trail of tears were for the ones who would not "modernize" and transported to a reservation.

People from more then one nation were removed from their homeland. Not just the Cherokee, there were many more.

I knew many tribes that were removed in some way, but I thought only Cherokees walked the trail of tears.

ETA: quick Google search and it was several tribes not just Cherokees.

While it is an honorable speech, there's just something about it that seems majorly off.

E. Pluribus unum (from many, one)

It seems to me that the best way to acheive this would be to educate our young people (and older ones too) about the collage of backgrounds (ethnic, religious, etc...) of the people that make up this country rather than encouraging everyone to ignore them. This country was built on diversity. If we can learn to accept and respect each other instead of judging and competing to be "better" than those who are different then we will be able to acheive the unity the OP seems to be aiming for.

Great speech it would seem fit for our decaying schools albeit not all.

Was the trail of tears recent? I must have missed that one I do not always keep up on current events. Name one indigenous tribe that has not been re-homed.

I suppose it depends upon your "Philosophy" (whether you ARE an American -"Nationalist"- OR, perhaps, a "Globalist") AND whether you consider Government to be "Your Slave" or YOU the "Government's Slave". Your personal perspective and preferences determine your attitudes.

As George Carlin, the comedian, once noted:

"By definition, an I.Q. of 100 is average. It is frightening to realize that 1/2 the people are dumber than that."

Another good reason to educate young people of other cultures. To answer your question, unless the 1800's is considered recent, this is not a current event.
