What every High School Principal SHOULD say: (I agree)

Don't know where you are NW Tennessee, but it is required for all students to take a personal finance class in order to get a diploma. We also have what we call an Intervention class where manners, respect, civil behavior, characters (kindness, responsibility, etc), bullying, and career choices are covered. It may not be the best, but at least my county is really trying to make it work.

My disagreement with our schools is the fact that they must choose a "career path" in the 9th grade... YIKES!!! Their classes are planned according to what they choose for the next 3 years. I would rather see them be required to take 3-4 classes in different areas so they are better informed of a college career path.

I honestly believe if some of the paperwork that is now required for teachers is slowed down... we could concentrate on what we ARE SUPPOSED to be doing rather than on the unnecessary paper pushing. I know some teachers HAVE to have the paperwork shoved at them or they won't do what they are supposed to do.

It would also be nice for the TEACHERS along with the lawmakers to decide on the standards... some of the stuff we teach in biology are useless to them... this day and age we need practical lessons, not something they will learn for the test and NEVER use in real life. JMHO

I myself have a degree in Microbiology/Vet Medicine and have worked at a med tech, molecular biologist research tech on the human genome project, and work as a safety microbiologist under homeland security after 9/11. Teaching is a second career for me and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE every minute of it. I cut my pay in more than half, but I would not go back to a microbiology job... I was bored to tears.

I just wish my kids were not afraid of the teachers to the point of refusing to ask for a lesson on something whether it be something in math or reading musical notes. Maybe my kids are just too shy,or the teacher impatient to repeat a lesson. In the end my kid either does not learn it or I need to teach it,because the teacher says," You are lazy!" I might as well teach my lazy child at home and pocket the tuition money I pay.

I think schools should reflect the needs and desires of the student body. Students and staff working toward making the environment what they want it to be like. There could be funding for things if the budget was worked on.Personally I see no reason why our local public high school has 3 principals, and each of them is making near or over 100k.Bit overkill in the pay department. Also, no need to hire retired staff that get pay IN ADDITION to FULL retirement benefits. Instead retire, relax, volunteer for free, and let that new teacher graduate get a shot at teaching. It is sad to see so many new college grads working in restaurants and your local walmart.

Well now Ms. KristyHall, you did not answer the question.

I don't have solutions either, just opinions.

IMO, schools should focus mainly on basic subjects: sciences (includes computer), math, English, civics, history, foreign languages, etc. AND tech school classes... BECAUSE... these subjects are pathways to careers/jobs.

You are assuming, incorrectly, that I am against fine arts classes and extra curricular activities. Not so since I worked in a fine arts college for many years. My county high school has unbelievable teachers/talented students in theater, music, and speech. (Actress Cherry Jones is a graduate.) I was speaking in general from reading and watching news programs. You may be interested in the book, "The World is Flat" by Thomas L. Friedman. It is enlightening and shocking.

My point about education in other cultures is well taken this week. ABC reporting about Sukanya Roy, champion at the 84th national spelling bee: "She is now the fourth consecutive Indian-American to take the title at the Scripps spelling bee, and the ninth within the past 13 years." My son taught a seminar class for his master's degree and he, too, was impressed with the dedication and hard work of his Asian students.

I am just saying that, IMO, educators/parents/students should be laser focused on a foundation of subjects. Everything else is icing on the cake.

Finatv, I will PM you. We may live in the same county. I am impressed with your dedication.

so because someone does not agree they are without wit or you are somehow wittier? how rude, and arrogant that sounds.

If you disagree say so, if you don't wish to discuss it with us anymore than don't but do not pretend it is because you are somehow smarter or wittier than someone you disagree with.

shame on you
