What exactly is a Mahogany Red?

mahogany is what is referred to as, Pumpkins in Gamefowl. and Gingers reds in OEGB and other breeds (usually.) some mahoganys i have seen are like the Deep red (seen in rhode island reds, and Red. or Black tailed red. OEGBS)

Since they are show quality, the breeding emphasis is on type and color, not egg laying, so no, they will not be as good of layers as say a hatchery quality RIR.

But they will be good or decent layers since that is part of what they were originally bred for. Better than say, my standard cochins!

Next time hubby decides to purchase chickens I think I will 'tag" along with him. He doesnt ask enough questions.. lol.. I wanted good egg layers!!!!! Oh well.. live and learn i guess

Those "Mahogany Reds" won't burn out in 2 years. Instead they'll give you a steady supply for 4-5! Too often Production Reds are done laying by the 2nd year and by then they are too stringy for the stew pot too, which is why I prefer the heritage RIRs. They are "eye candy" AND steady, long-term producers.
