What exactly IS that "scared chicken dance" they do? LOL

I finally got my first "chicken dance" last night.

I always thought that only the roos did this. So its not a mating thing?? Is it submission or is it to tell who's in charge?

Mine do the dance every time I catch them on the back porch stealing cat food out of our Willie's bowl. Hold on, I'm fixin to make them dance right now, LOL. Little thiefs!

I did kinda spook them. The 3 silkies I have are still in a large cage (sooo cold out) They are 13 weeks old, and when I turned on the light and sat next to the cage, my large white roo started dancing. It was too funny

No, I'd be afraid to walk outside with a crown on for fear they would jump on my head and try to eat it. My neice left one of her little rinestone flip flops on the back porch and they pecked every last one off. Never found any of the stones, so I guess they ate them! Haven't lost a bird, so guessing I'll find shiny poop soon. LOL, probably the closest thing I'll have to real snow this Christmas...Shiney Chicken Poop, LOL

Roosters do the little dancing around , kinda in circles when they fixing to MATE with the nearby hen/pullet LOL

First time my now 16 yr. old DD saw a rooster do the mating dance, she was 7 at the time I think, she came running into the house saying "Momma, come quick, somethings terribly wrong with poor Rehabs leg!" Rehab was a big RIR rooster that I took in as a rescue from the local HS and I just couldn't let him go after nursing him back to health. We had only had hens up until Rehab came along, so she thought he was really hurt since she had never seen the mating dance before. Another time she came running in upset cause Rehab was beating up her favorite hen. It was then that I had to explain the chicken version of the birds and the bees.
