What farm animal would you suggest?

* Hi there, AC. Been reading and I have a suggestion. In your climate, I think I would go with a small well- insulated shed space and design it to house chickens on one side AND RABBITS on the other-- and I would probly go with SIX OF EACH. Adding rabbits to the shed gives you HEAT HELP for the chickens PLUS eggs and 2 meat sources-- and a unbeatable fertilizer combo!!!!

(ED: I might do a lattice wall & door between them just to keep the chickens from roosting on the rabbit hutches.)

One Farm animal that I can highly recomend is the Dexter Cow, we have 3 of them at the moment. Hip high cattle that are very calm and friendly, very disease resistant(we never had a sick dexter, ever!!), and can give up to 9 L of milk a day.
They are also plenty of meat for a small(3-4 head) family.

I love'em!!!

Nothing against chickens, but dexters would be another option.
They really just need a wind barrier to be happy, ours have a barn and never use it.

well, you really didn't say what you wanted them for..

meat - rabbit has the best meat/feed ratio conversion. Meaning you get the most meat out of the feed for them.

chickens - easy to take care of, but if you want lots of eggs for your feed, make sure to stick to Leghorns, RIR's, Red/Black stars. If you get any of the "fancy" or "rare" kinds you use more feed get less eggs.

Both take little space and little work.

i reccommend a goat. i am 23 and going thru vet school. but my nineth grade year 1999-2005 i raised and bred them and thats how i made my money! they are sooo fun and cute and very affectionate. i have one that will ride in the truck with me! they are all leash trained, and really smart.
my two favorites are:
boar goats, are huge and beautiful and nigerian dwarf goats, cute, small and friendly

any more ques just ask!

A great place to get such animals is at an auction...particularly now as many people are looking to raise a little extra capital right before winter. This should alleviate your affordability concerns while giving a good home to some good animals and helping your local farm community at the same time.

Good luck!

I'd get some suffolk sheep. Theyre friendly, reproduce easily, theyre profitable on the meat market, and their wool has industrial value.

If you really wanted to start something get some Merino sheep- the medium build ones that produce a nice carcass. Fiber is quite a nice localized and online industry, and you have ample space and time to perfect a nice lineage of animals.

If you just want a farmy type animals just for companionship, I would say to get a pot-bellied pig. You only need one. They can be house-trained. They are long-lived and pretty intelligent.
