What gender?

What gender is this week old redstar chick?

It's the only chick with spots like this, all the others are buff. We ordered them from Cackle Hatchery, they usually give us extra chicks that turn out to be roosters. I do not know what this chick looked like at day one because we didn't reconize it as a certain chick until its feathers came. It's name is Tiger.

That's a rhode island red. You probably won't know the gender until 4-5 weeks old. Actually my RIR's comb turned red at 5 weeks and I'm pretty darn sure it's a she. She has her big girl voice and no crowing, just a lot of clucking.

Oh, I'm guessing that's a pullet btw.

It's a Redstar.

Probably the reason it looks like a RIR is because redstar are half RIR and half white leghorn.

So it just randomly happened that that one gets spotty?

She doesn't really look like any of the redstars I've had. Mine don't have patterned feathers like that. Cackle might have sent you an extra of another breed -- like RIR or PR. It looks like a RIR to me. But if it is a redstar, it would be a pullet because the cockerels are white.
