I have been a member for several years. I was participating for awhile due to some health issues. I just came back as I really enjoyed the information on the page but, I may not stay. Were did all the advertisements come from and why? They are very distracting and really take away from the page.

If you are a premium feather member, there are no ads. You can obtain a PFM in 2 ways that I know of…
You can pay for it, thus supporting the website, or, like I do, you can enter various BYC contests such as the weekly caption contest and win a free PFM. I have had a free PFM for years just by winning fun contests now and then.

Regarding Advertisements: We work VERY hard to keep the ads as moderate as possible. Running a site as big as BYC is very expensive (servers/hardware, software, contractors, etc. etc. etc.). We need ads to keep the site free for you (and millions of other people) to enjoy. In our research the quantity of ads on BYC is less than most "free" websites, and often better-quality / less-anoying.

Regarding Ad Blockers: Please avoid using them on BYC. Ads are by far the primary way we keep the site free for millions of people. We disable a bunch of the ad placements for members to make their experience better. We also disable 100% of all ads for our Premium Feather Members (PFM). So, if you'd like to use BYC, please either do so with ads enabled, or purchase / win a PFM.
