What hatcheries do YOU recommend?

Cackle is the only one I have ordered from. I agree with Poulets. They are practically all reputable and will most likely get you decent hatchery stock. I'd suggest ordering from the one that is close to you. Some do not hatch themselves but order from real hatcheries. Just because they are located in a certain place does not mean that the chicks are shipped from there. Make sure you know where the chicks are actually shipped from.

For the record, I ordered 27 from Cackle and got 28. Of the ones that were supposed to be pullets, 14 out of 15 were. Of the 12 straight run + one packing peanut, 9 were pullets and 4 were roosters. All were healthy and did well. I got your breeds and don't have any complaint about either one, but they are not show quality. My only complaint about Cackle is that they are very hard to get on the phone. Once you get them they are great to work with, but they need more phone lines and people working the phone.

i would say that you need to find the closest hatchery to your location. i ordered from ideal which is in TX and i am in Idaho and everyone of my chics surivied and they are awesome! i also have a local hatchery in boise that i buy from, i go to ideal for the breeds that they do not offer.

Does Duane Urch have Barnevelders? A 4h group near me ordered from him last year for a chick auction, and while all of the crested breeds turned out poorly the non-cresteds were pretty uniformly good. I got some white wyandottes at that auction and I loved them. They were large and mostly true to type as well as very healthy. I lost all but one roo to a dog, however that roo is still outside and is crowing as I type.

Urch has some nice birds.

I think Sandhill is probably one of the best out there. But, given that I they were sold out by the time I ordered (just timing...no reflection on either party), I went through Welp. My order was drop shipped via Privett; however, Welp has a better reputation when it comes to customer service, so I was ok with that (plus, Privett is closer so less shipping time for me!

). With that said, I am very happy with our stock. They are of course hatchery stock, so the birds aren't the best representation of the breeds, but close enough for our needs. Now that I have a broody, in the future I can go through a breeder, but for egg laying and dual purpose meat birds, we are very happy! Out of 58 birds that we have gotten out of the Privett hatchery, we only lost 3. Two were delicate breeds and died at 4 days old and the 3rd had to be culled due to cross beak. When I called them, their customer service was very polite and apologetic. I'd definitely order through Welp again (after Sandhill) if I was to go through a hatchery!

I
have ordered from them but have talked to them about thier breeds and the min is 15 mix match.
We got ours from MCM hatchery they all were healthy. I have not lost any of mine. We did split order and they did lose one or two but I do know they were about 1 or 2 months old.
I would get more fom them, but they do not have the breeds I want and if they do it is str only. There are always going to be people who have trouble with the big hatcheries. They do have
Barnevelders, Java, Welsummer, Langshan. Sold in -- P,C, Str. Just some of the rare ones. Good Luck!

I have ordered form Ideal last spring, the customer service on the phone was great. I ordered several different types of Leghorns, all arrived safe and healthy and turned out to be very beautiful birds.

i just recieved 30 chicks from ideal they were great . i only had 2 that were dead on arrival and the weather was 14 degrees out . i just called and they refunded me great customer service . also bought 25 from cackle and i have to say their customer service stunk and the wait was long. i also got 50 guineas from townline and they were great too. hope this helps
