What have you been reading?

I can't even find a place to input keywords. I asked the librarian about searching, he showed me what I already knew. :(

He suggested Hoopla, saying it is free.

It is free but I really don't want to make an account.

I have access to an audible account. My son checked with amazon about sharing his account with me and they said no problem. He has quite different taste in books, though, with a few exceptions- thankfully long series. I could buy some I like on his account. That gets expensive. And I avoid amazon - I liked it when it was small. I don't like it being so much of a monopoly.

I also forgot but depending on how your libraries system is set up you can search for a book you want to read or listen to on Libby in your libraries catalog and from there you can click on it and it should pull it up in Libby or Overdrive.

My to-read list keeps growing!

I don't read much, anymore, but I do listen to audiobooks and podcasts. Lately, I have been brushing up on my French by listening to Learn French with Daily Podcast and also Duolingo French podcast, Those podcasts are for intermediate level conversation and about perfect for me after 40 years since I had college French.

:old I only wish I had access to all these great tools back when I was in college.

I look forward to spring and summer when I can be outside working. I have a pair of bluetooth workphones that I connect to my cell phone and listen to my audiobooks and podcasts while working in the yard and/or gardening. I can spend hours outside working in the yard and listening to a good audiobook or podcasts makes the time fly and the work just a bit more enjoyable.

This past week we had a few days approaching 50F outside, so, I got down my mountain bike and started to go for short rides again. Just trying to get in better shape. I wear my bluetooth workphones when I go for those rides and that gives me something to think about other than my old, out-of-shape body. It was a nice 3 day streak, but then the weather turned colder again so I'm taking a break. If the temps get below 40F, I'm not going outside to breath in all that cold air deep down into my lungs and give myself a bad chest cold.

If anyone has some suggestions on how to protect myself from breathing in cold air while cycling (I also wear glasses), I would like to know. Maybe some kind of face mask? I can keep my body plenty warm from the exercise and layers of clothes, but I will get a bad chest cold if I breath in all that cold air.

I am also looking into eBikes so I can go out for longer rides and have a powered assist if I need more energy to get back home (I'm 61 years old now). Anyway, longer rides mean more time to relax and listen to some good audiobooks and podcasts while improving my physical health as well.

About 5 of those are on my list too!

I have cold induced asthma. If I have to go outside when it’s very cold or exercise in mildly cold weather I usually where a cloth dust mask, a lightweight scarf or a medical mask. Those help protect my airways and the lower half of my face. If I need to protect my forehead I usually add a knit cap.

Finished:

Knifepoint by Alex Van Tol

Viral by Alex Van Tol ( Both are short easy YA novels I read to fall asleep.)

Narrative of the life of Fredrick Douglas by Frederick Douglass

The Odyssey by Homer

The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli (very old nonfiction. I found it mildly interesting)

Wonder by R.J. Palacio ( Good book. Well written)

Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo

A Journey to the New World: Diary of Remember Patience Whipple by Kathryn Lasky (Dear America Series)

Continuing:

Farewell to Manzanar

Started:

The Problem of Pain by C.S Lewis

The Aeneid by Virgil

For the past week or so I’ve started trying to make a significant dent in my TBR shelf so I’ve been going through a lot of the quick and or easy reads first. I’ve been doing this because I’ve made rule with myself that I have to get through about 90% of it before I can set foot in an actual book store and I found out the other family member that likes to go book shopping will be coming up in visit in a few months.

Finished:

Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie: The Oregon Trail Diary of Hattie Campbell By Kristina Gregory (Dear America series)

From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg

Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls (I really enjoyed this one. I fell in love with the characters and was really invested. I was rooting for dogs the whole time even though I really hate coon hunting in real life.)

Roll of Thunder Here My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor

The First Part Last by Angela Johnson

The House by Raelyn Drake (Didn’t enjoy this one. The plot was boring and the characters were unrealistically perfect. Wouldn’t have finished it but it was extremely short).

Continuing:

The Aeneid

Farewell to Manzanar

Started:

Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine

Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah

Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys

DNFs: The Problem of Pain by C.S. Lewis. I may or may attempt this one again someday but for now it’s going back on the shelf.
