What have you done for your chickens today?

DH has been letting then out in the early AM, and I take them a hot breakfast about 3 hours later. Been working on cleaning out the freezer (dug to the bottom and back for old freezer burned stuff, and boil it into a soup. Also been going through the pantry for 'expired' dry goods that are getting tacky, literally and adding it to their 'soup'. The soup the last couple days started with Golden Mushroom soup(where that came from I haven no idea, I don't buy it) and stale grape nuts. Added leftover veges and a bit of milk. Didn't look or smell bad, and they sucked it right down.

Let the older girls free range for the afternoon, but the younger birds, around 15 weeks, still race out to the woods when I leave the run open. Have to move the coop and run before I fence their yard. That is next weeks agenda, DS said he would be over to help with that next Wed, so they have to make due for another week.

Well yesterday I went to the day old bread store and bought them some more bread. They will get some more of it on Wednesday.
They have started laying a little better since I have been giving them some bread every three days or so.
I also give them table scraps that the dog will not eat. They got some yesterday. You know the dog is jealous of the chickens he turns his nose at veggies so that is what I give the chickens, and he stands and barks at them for eating his scraps. The chickens aren't afarid of him, they just look at him and try to jump him through the fence.

Well mine got some more bread today. They seem to really like this, it has increased their egg production for this time of the year.

My girls are crazy about ramen. They got used to me clucking & calling when I turned boards over because Mom knows where all the good bugs are. So when a little leftover ramen got into the scraps, they fell all over themselves to gobble it up. Of course I only give it to them plain--no seasoning pack.

Ran the snowblower in their run after they went to bed...should be pleased in the morning when they see bare ground, since they have decided that the snow is for penguins and they hate to go out...and they all got some leftover gingerbread and lettuce...spoiled birds.

Gave 'em feed, fresh water, and hand-sawed a tree trunk into a roost for one pair today.. A little way back (couple days to a week, can't recall) I filled all of their pens with leaves to scratch around in.

Aside from talking to Lucy & a couple of the other girls, they got some apple pieces for their treat.
She usually comes running to me with a quizical look of "What do we get today?" or "Where's the treat stuff?" if I come out empty-handed.
It's rained almost all day, but they still wanted to free-range, so I let them. Some of them ended up looking like drowned rats!

they were let out early to run about in the sunshine, even though it was a bit chilly for Alabama. The chicken bucket from the kitchen had some tasty jasmine rice from last night. thew some cracked corn and fresh water and food in the feeders. Lots of gossip and fun running around!
