What In The Bajeebas Is This???

jack & mommy's duckies :

I have brown and gold coturnix. I just let them all breed together in one large pen. I just breed for eating eggs and meaty little bodies. But my last hatch of last year yeilded 7 pure yellow....white when they grew up baby's.

Kinda cool I think

Yes, you will get whites, golden, and browns from "Golden" . Throw in a brown or 2...more browns than whites or golden. Yes, it is very cool, and why I say "Welcome to coturnix genetics"!

Sometimes breeders of old put markers in their birds. Wouldn't have to use the pesky leg bands then. Just looking at the birds and seeing what they threw, they would know when to add back a marker. A Manchurian Gold should not throw a White unless it had previously been parented by one, somewhere in the ancestry of the line.

But then remember, white is a normal common mutation of these birds. It would not have had to have been in the line to begin with.

Mutations can pop up anytime, anywhere, they are not necessarily in the bred history of the birds. Look at the color mutations. Any one of them can pop up at any time. That's why you need to know about them. Your right, the magical world of Coturnix genetics is right. Maybe, Mutational world of the Coturnix genetics. the more people that raise them, the more that mutations will pop up.

THIS VERY IDEA IS EXACTLT WHY THE TEXAS A&M'S EVERYONE RECOGNIZES TODAY (WHITE WITH OR WITHOUT THE THROW BACK SPOTS) ARE WHITE... THE ORIGINAL BIRDS DESIGNED AND RELEASED BY TEXAS A&M UNDER THE DIRECTOR OF THE PROJECT (DR THORNBERRY) WERE BROWNS.... THE CHANGE TO WHITE HAPPENED A NUMBER OF YEARS LATER AT THE COMMERCIAL BREEDERS FACILITY... SEEM AS THO SOME FOLKS THINK THE WHITE BIRDS YIELD A MORE VISUALLY APPEALING CARCASS FOR TABLE USE. (NO MELANIN IN THE FEATHER FOLICALS OR HOCK JOINTS...)

I know some old timers that wouldn't hesitate to kill it on the spot. My great grandpa had a hen that would crow, and it had chicks that were a weird color so he went outside and shot them all because they were bad luck. He would have got to the hen sooner, but he thought it was a rooster. It looks like you have a freak of nature.
