I have had chickens for about 6 years now, and have been on BYC for quite awhile. I guess it's just a known fact what a chicken saddle is........but I don't know! Can anyone enlighten me, please? Thanks!

It's so the chicken jockey won't fall off.

Seriously, a chicken saddle is to protect the hen from an over amorous rooster. Oft times a rooster will tear a hens back up with his feet and spurs. If it is too severe it could lead to infection and even death.

Oh, alright! I kind of thought that's waht it was, but wasn't sure, and not brave enough to ask a dumb question. Thanks Opa! LOL at your first response-you're too funny!

Never hesitate to ask a question. We are all still learning too.

I am using one to protect a bare spot on a hen's back where she was feather picked months ago, and the feathers have not grown back. It prevents sunburn, and keeps her warmer in winter.

What the others said -

I make them. There is a pic on my BYC page - I think - I am working on it...occasionally

---------- They make a hen look so motherly to me --------- And I didn't know what a chicken saddle was until I got on BYC either

It can also help when a predator like a hawk tries to pick them up they have a hard time grabbing and getting a hold them.

When hens lose their back feathers due to feather picking, do they grow back after molting? I've seen some seriously feather picked birds at a flea market...no, I didn't buy any...and I was just wondering if they would grow back if I ever encounter this problem.
