what is a good "flighty"chicken breed-thanks guys-got it.

Definitely consider Campines. They are awesome foragers and very wary of predators. They are one of my favorite breeds because of their personality and intelligence. Plus, they make some awfully nice eye candy.
I also like Brown Leghorns, Fayoumis and American Game. White Leghorns are excellent birds. But in my experience, will be some of the first to be picked off by predators because of their color.

Well you already have hamburgs on your list. I have my first and love her. Of course I'm trying to make a pet of mine, but she's def. the most independent and non-people oriented of my newbies. Supposed to be good layers too.

Just a quick question,
Are you assuming that all gamefowl are mean, or do you have past experience with gamefowl breeds?

I have American Game and the hens can be just like any other breed of chicken, some will have a attitude and some will not.
Most of my American Game run loose with my hens with no real problems.

hey Chris,
no i don't have past experience but i would like some roosters out as well.i thought with games, i could only have 1 roo and also it might be a problem with my other penned chickens.i have several rooster pens and figured the game roos would be bothering them.

Key west chickens are excellent foragers and will lay a small white egg just about every day. The hens are excellent mothers and the cocks are great protectors. THey seem to evade the predators here that get most of the other birds on our property. They never get sick either. None of mine have ever gotten sick even when we had fowl pox go through the other flocks. They will eat every roach, pincher bug etc that they see lol. THe males are really beautiful and some of the hens are too. There are a few different people you can get 'rescue' key west chickens from here in FLorida. I know an excellent source near Deland whom the key west wildlife center ships birds to and she finds homes for them.

Here is my Key West roo I think he is so pretty and not mean at all even though he does have game in his background. This first generation are very flighty because they were once wild on Key West. My 2nd and 3rd generations are more tame. Each generation is tamer if you make sure to handle them. If you incubate and raise the chicks yourself they will be very tame. If you let the broody hen raise them they take on the temperment of the mother (how she reacts to you).

If you are getting you birds through a hatchery, there roosters have a lot of the aggression bred out of them and there going to be like most any rooster free ranging.
Shoot my Rhode Island Reds and Polish would tease and try to fight a rooster in a breeding pen if left.

I don't know how much land you have but if you have some land and your neighbors ain't too close you cold consider Guinea Fowl.

Chris

Fayoumis and Games are about the best pure breeds mentioned for fending for themselves. A. Games aren't what some think. You just can't raise the males together. I wish I could have them. Mediteranean Breeds if eggs are important. I enjoyed the article on Fayoumis in the BackYard Poultry magazine.

here is some that i think are good fliers
don't get anything fluffy looking like ur cochins of course and silkies or any production birds, it's best to stick with light birds in ur case other bantams, games, birds with a leghorn looking body such as minorcas, polish
just don't get any heavy birds, but if u want bantams avoid fluffy breeds like silkies, cochins, brahmas ect....
