What is a good starting chicken for 4-H fancy showing?

I forgot to answer your fist question too. I personally like Sebrights their small , easy to handle, and their very beautiful, you just need to handle them ALOT.

Modern Game Bantams are great for kids to start showing, small, great attitudes, very people friendly, and dont have a lot of excess feathering to get messed up....Old English Game Bantams are also a good choice...

Got Game brought up a good point. There is extra care you have to give to cochins because of their foot feathering, that could make it or break it in the show. Not to discourage you! Just know if you want to work and show with them you will have to create 4x4 "Show boxes" that they live in during show season so they don't break all there foot feathering.

I hope we didn't scare you away but alot of us have experience and are just sharing what we think is best! It's up to you to decide what you want/like!

I call them show boxes, but basically it's what they live in during show season. It keeps them clean and separated from other birds. You have to keep the hens and cocks separated during show season so they don't ruin their back feathers mounting and breeding, also if you have a bunch of feather footed birds together you run the chance of ruining their foot feathering. A Cochin Masterbreeder I know keeps all his show birds in 4ft x 4ft boxes that are in a large coop so that they stay in good condition.

Yup, during show season all my birds are kept in separate pens. I'll put clean legged hens together, roosters go in their own pens and were building our show boxes for the feather legged birds.
