What is a "Tetra Brown?"

These were the Tetra Browns, along with Leghorns (?), we have here in Ky from TSC today. They are a light reddish blonde with almost auburn stripes.
Yep, those definitely appear to be red sex links. I'm thinking they are a new "brand" of red sex link. I'll have to see if my TSC gets them in.

Oh they are so dern KAYOOT!!!! I mean cute cute cute! I'd asked about them at TSC cause their sign only had their name on it (Tetra Brown) and no other info, while all the other chickies had their name, rank, serial number etc etc... but no one had any info. :::shrugs:::

Ok, wait a minute. I see from Tetra's website they are Tetra Americana not Ameraucana. There a big difference. The first is just a company name the second is an actual breed of chicken. So these Tetras from TSC are a company bred chicken not an Ameraucana breed chicken. The people who made the sign at TSC wrote the wrong name because I suspect they are pronounced very close to the same.
Best,
Karen

Found the website. Looks like the company is called Tetra Americana and the chicks they sell are called Tetra Browns (and a few others). Great, that's not going to confuse people or anything, especially when TSC is labeling them ameraucanas.

The website.

Yeah, I figured I just have cross breed "mutt" chickens. I had read about the confusion (sometimes purposeful) between the labeling "Americana" and "Ameraucana." That's fine for us as this is our first foray into chicken keeping and we weren't looking for a special breed. I'll be happy to just have healthy hens that give us plenty of good eggs. But I think TS or the hatcheries should be a little more clear about it.

This is so interesting. I went to TSC today to see what chicks they have so far and it seems they also have Tetra Browns and Leghorns at the moment. I didn't buy any yet because I'd also never heard of them before so came home to do a search since the very helpful people at the store also new nothing about them. My search gave me the same info I've seen here; brown bird with brown eggs. I learned they are good layers and a very docile chicken of medium size. I also found a site that says they are an Ameraucanas. The pics I saw showed a reddish brown bird with creamy white tail.

At any rate, they sound like an ok laying breed to me and I will probably buy a few but I think I'll wait a bit to see what other breeds they get in the next week or so. I'd like a more colorful flock if I could.

We bought 3 of the "Tetra browns" from TSC last Friday, they are the friendliest of the 8 chicks that we bought. 3 Tetra browns, 3 Leghorns and 2 Barred Rocks. This is my first go at chicks so its all new to me but its interesting reading these threads :) I am sure I will be posting lots of pics as they grow!

Hi, i don't think tetra Americana's of any color are mutts. I think they are a commercial crossbreed in poultry for the general public. There's a big difference . Mutts are just mixed breeds. Tetras are specially crossbreed from specific breeds for a specific purpose. That purpose being a reliable chicken for the general public. Read the Tetra Americana website, it's interesting. Best, Karen
