What is he??

This is Ringo. He is 6 mths old and is so far a good rooster. He has never grown out sickle feathers and has this sort of blunt tail. Is this a normal trait? He eats good and seems happy and respects me so it cannot be a health issue. Is this a genetic thing? Also, what breed is he? I got him at TSC from a mixed bin.

Looks gorgeous!! Not sure the breed, but I have had 2 roosters that haven't grown talls, just like yours. I believe it is just genetic if there parents and such didn't have full tails, then they are carrying on the trait

Thank you!! The picture truly does him no justice because in person he had these flashes of purple and dark green colors going on in his feathers plus he is a big boy lol! When he gets to mature size goodness!! He shows a calm, nice disposition. Just wish he had some flashy tail feathers. Mottle Java? Gotta look that breed up. Thanks

I also think he's a beautiful Mottled Java cockerel.

Health-wise, your boy sounds as though he's completely normal, so I would rule that out. Genetics seems to explain his "bitty" tail better.

He is a good boy to his girls. Two weeks ago we put three big girls in with him and he is gentle with them. I think he will be a nice roo when he gets older. He has a gentleman attitude with lots of calm.

I also agree that he's a mottled Java cockerel. This is a slow developing breed, so he may yet grow a longer, fuller tail. He is also going to be a large bird-- he's not done growing yet.
