What is more important to you?

Some breeds are mostly for show (seramas for example), but it's truly a pet peeve of mine when heritage and dual purpose breeds are selected for looks only and end up with the production traits bred out of them. We raise ours for eggs and meat, but there's no reason they can't be beautiful too.

It is important for me to have a good layer, that is healthy inside and out- so they have to look good with beautiful color eggs. Good genes and breed brings healthy eggs I guess. With my family into protein diets since we’re so active we need good food and good “pets” so to speak.
In case I misunderstood the q, I go for a heritage layer vs the ornamental birds.

Eggs.

That being said, last flock was mostly Easter Eggers because I liked the variety of shell covers more than the amount of eggs.

That
having been said, one of the four I will be getting for my next flock will probably be a Laced Wyandotte mainly for their showy feathers and sweet disposition.

I don’t have chickens but when I get them they will be ornamental. I would have to collect one of each kind of bantam and by then I’d be over run with eggs as DH isn’t much of an egg eater. I’ll probably have a bachelor pad for the Roos. Sigh, they’re years away..

Is it more important to you to have a good layer or something to look at? I want to know what other people think.

Thanks!!!!
Yes. To both.

I chose breeds that are supposed to be friendly and that I thought were pretty. I have only 4, and I get between 25 and 28 eggs every week now. I keep a dozen and give the rest to family and neighbors.

That being said, I just ordered Silkies, which are not layers - LOL! I get eggs AND I have yard candy. Best of both worlds!
