What is the best kind of duck?

ANCONA!

I have had many many breeds of ducks, and Ancona are the painted pony of the duck world!

They are rare, but are so super sweet! WITHOUT taming or imprinting they will naturally follow people around, are VERY easy going (especially for ducks) and are one of the quietest of all the breeds due to their easy-going nature.

They are so pretty, the most colorful of all the ducks, and lay LOADS of eggs...and have good meat (considered gourmet flavor meat) with an easy-cleaning carcass, too.

They are also highly resistant to diseases.

AND they do not fly away, even when startled like most ducks.

MY FAV!

I loved my Anconas! They were some funny ducks. My drake was the definite ring leader of all my ducks. He made herding them up for bed a nightmare. He would lead the group right to the entrance of the night run just as calm as could be and then right before the gate he would make a break for it and run off with everyone following. LOL

As much as I like Anconas, Mini Appleyards are still my favorite.

We have blue Swedish, which are funny to watch as they lumber when they walk, Khaki Campbell which I believe are just beautiful birds, and f/w Indian runners which are very funny. From all the girls, total of 8, we usually get 8 eggs a day. So all 3 breeds are excellent layers. Runners are not know to go broody, usually. As their name implies, they like to run. None fly, so you don't have to clip wings. All love to swim of course, but not necessary to have a pond. We are fans of all 3.
