Well I just wrote up a reply and it vanished, so if this shows twice ignore one..
But, this is my recommendation. .
as soon as your shipped eggs arrive and reach room temps, stick them in the incubator, do not turn or turn on auto turner until the end of day 3. .
set them upright during hatch (I've tried both and much better success this way)..
I use paper cartons, and I tear them down until it's just basically a circle just enough to support the egg.. I've also used toilet paper/paper towel rolls cut down (think easter egg holder)..those are great if you're short on space as you can put individual eggs wherever. ..

Jumping late into this thread, but am glad I found it! I unhooked my auto-turner as it was rocking them for about the first16 hrs and of course, the above mentioned cut-out egg carton....so I'll see what they all look like on Day 3.

Good luck, I recommend reading this, if you haven't already. Don't be nervous about not turning them. I go 5 days and had great development.

Thanks for the link! Loads of info & it makes sense. Did crack open a torpedo-shaped egg for fertility (sigh....really not sure why an experienced chicken breeder would send oddly shaped eggs when he's perfectly aware they're for hatching.

Just have to vent! ) Anyways, the membranes were pretty detached with a big air sac. So I did let the others sit for over 24hrs to help stabilize. Will treat them all like NICU babies.

I've got two orders of silkie eggs coming in. One 20+ the other 6+. My question, do you tilt all eggs besides the ones with detached cells or treat correct ones normally.

If you get the eggs and your aircells look normal, totally solid and firm, then you can treat them as a normal egg. Sometimes I've gotten eggs that were really fresh and air cells were tiny and it was hard to see if they were loose or not, so I gave them 48 hours just as a precaution. Most important days for turning are 3-8. So, I personally like to give shipped eggs those first 2 days to settle, regardless.

Thanks, got the 20+ eggs yesterday and all aircells intact. Was marked live embryos, so guess it was handled more gently.

That's excellent news!! Seriously, that's the best case scenario. I just have to ask do you have separate calibrated thermometers and a hygrometer in your incubator? What bator are you using?

I'm using a reptibator, I used to raise bearded dragons. It has temp/ humidity built in. Control is great on temp and it monitors humid. Good I'm at 40% humid. On it currently.
