what is the proper etiquette for garage sales..dogs acceptable or not?

I tend to agree with Delmar just ask, they will be walking around helping folks. It would be alright at my place as long as they are behaved. If they say no then you don't need their junk anyways.

I think that generally, it is rude to assume your dog is welcome. If your dog is a good dog, he/she might actually BE welcome, but also, still might not. I wouldn't want someone bringing their dog to my house unless I knew their dog really well, since I have birds (duh) who might prove attractive to a dog. My dad brings his dog everywhere, and sometimes it's really annoying, even though his dog is amazingly well behaved, it makes me nervous, the way she stares at my birds (she's a Border Collie), and obviously wants to chase them... even though she doesn't do it. If, however, you live on a suburban or urban block, and the yard sale is right next to the road, I don't think it's a big deal. But if you're actually going more than 10 feet onto someone's land, I think you should leave the dog at home.

Bring your dog to my house. My three will play with it til it's dead tired. We seem to get everyones strays - cats and dogs alike. A garage sale is outside, people walk dogs. I would rather you BUY something than send you home to put your dog away.

Tough one. While I personally would have no problem if someone brought a friendly dog into my yard, I would not do it myself. The owner may not mind, but other people at the yard sale may have a fear of dogs, etc. and leave. I just wouldn't do it. Not everyone is a dog lover.

No dogs. Some people are afraid of dogs; too, most garage sales involve easily tipped over tables and racks.

I agree, leave the dog at home. The owner of the sale might not mind, but whos to say someone there shopping isn't terribly afraid of dogs or allergic or something? If someone assumed (this includes family) a dog was okay to bring to my house without my permission, I would tell them to please come back without the dog. I am a dog lover, but doesn't mean I want someone elses dog parading my property, peeing on things, licking things, drooling on things.

The neighbor kiddy corner to us (our backyards meet) always lets her dog out to go potty and EVERYTIME we are outside it bolts into our yard and jumps on me and my son. I don't pet it, look at it, nothing. I use my foot to push it away and act like I don't want anything to do with it. I don't want said neighbor to think I "love her dog" as much as she does, and it's okay if it comes charging into my yard everytime it's out, romping through my garden and knocking my son to the ground. It may be friendly, but it's OVERLY friendly.

tough one too!
i would probably say leave the dog behind. or in the car. If we had a tag sale, we already have 2 dogs, i wouldnt want to have them barking up a storm.

however if i have alot of stuff, and i am hoping to make money off the sale of those items, then some barking dogs, i wouldnt mind.

I also had my daughter bit by a dog a while ago, so any dogs, other than our own................freak me out for her.......jmo

There are many people that don't mind. There are many that do.
A long time ago, I remember mom doing this with our little dog.. and a lot of people would ask if they could pet her. She said yes because she was friendly.. but if a little kid came charging up we would scoop the dog up and try to explain why you should always ask first. Not our kid to teach, but something really important for them to know. They were told if they went back and got permission from their parents, they could pet her.
If sales got too crowded and we couldn't keep a good distance from the other customers.. then we would pay for what we wanted and head out.
Not because our dog minded, but because its uncomfortable for others to be forced by a crowd into close proximity if they didn't want it.

So I would consider doing it... but with 3 thoughts in mind
1. Permission from the seller.
2. The density of a crowd.
3. The number of little ones running about.

Went to a yard sale once,they had there dog (daschund) on a table (the home owners).My daughter reaches to pet it since it was on the table with some of the stuff.The dog almost bit her,the lady says don't touch it bites after the fact.
I give her the DUH look and leave.
Why would any one have a biter around people/children and risk a bite?

So I guess I would say no to dogs at yard sales due to the fact that anything could happen some home owner could have a cat that hates dogs and attack.I had a cat that hated dogs and would attack any strange dog that came onto our property.
