what is the proper etiquette for garage sales..dogs acceptable or not?

I have felt this topic ridiculous from the start.

Wow its so weird to see how different people see things. I can and will compare dogs to children. My dog IS my child. And no a child hopefully will not bite a stranger, but neither will my dog. We all base things off of our own dogs. But the simple fact is if you wish to take your dog with you then do it, nobody can tell you what to do. If the owners of the property dont like it leave, if the customers dont like it either leave or wait till they do. I sacrafice these little things for my dog and am happy to do it. And i work in retail and have seen many of dogs come through, and each time I do I have a treat waiting for it. Not all dogs are "killers". Most people look at it that way. What "if" the dog is a killer, well it could very well be. But i would put my trust in another person to not bring "killer" to my yard sale or into the store. I am one of those people full heartedly willing to trust people. Just like I expect them to trust me in making god decisions. Here is how i base my theory on how dogs are like kids. Kids druel on things, dogs druel on things. I have seen kids go to the bathroom at my work because there was a toilet on display, dog can and sometime do go to the bathroom. (That is partly do to bad owners, i always take my dog to the bathroom before entering a shop), Dogs knock things over, Kids knock things over. Dogs might bite someone, (i have seen this) kids might bite someone. I have never in my life experience a rampaging, barking, wild, dog come throgh my store or come to my garage sale. I have however had children do this. Except they were screaming not barking.

I have had 20 to 1 things broken by kids rather than dogs. Dont get me wrong i like kids but to me they are worse than dogs.

Just my opinion! Take your dog if you want. Just be prepared to make the sacrafices.

I love dogs but probably wouldn't take mine with me to a garage sale. Just don't see the point, I'd just take a walk afterwards with him/her.

I can and will compare dogs to children. My dog IS my child.

I say this as a dog lover, but its not good to treat your dog like your child (not sure if you actually treat him that way?) just like it is bad to treat your child like your best friend. You've got to be a parent with children, and to a dog you've got to be the alpha. Otherwise the dog will likely be dominant and be a spoiled brat that tries to boss you around. I know from experience with my parent's dog and they just won't listen. The dog is annoying and bosses everyone around but me, because she knows I'm the alpha. I can give that alpha aura off to dogs without any effort at all, yet they don't know or care how to... no idea why, because its not like the dog will love them any less. She knows they will do anything if she barks and acts berserk..drives me crazy.

I think a lot more than "some" people are irrisponsible with their dogs. I have been to places with my dogs, where they were expressly welcome. Had Foenix get into a fight with a yellow Lab at the dog beach, Foenix wasn't looking for a fight -- but got one anyway. The owners of the Lab got a great big vet bill and a dog that, despite injuries, probably didn't learn a thing and neither did the owners.

I bring my dogs to a lot of public places, but never to garage or yard sales. Its too distracting and the close quarters with the potential of a lot of children just make it seem like a bad idea to me.

Good point. No i dont treat my dog like i would a child. But in a sence she is my child. I was just comparing the two. My dog does know i am the alpha and will get punished for doing something bad, but she gets beyond spoiled. (only when she is good)

But truthfully its the same when you are the parent of a child. You need to be the parents/ alpha to them as well. When they are bad they get punished when they are good they get rewarded. Dont listen to me im going to be one of those people who end up with a husband with no kids except the ones that dont talk back, well most of the time.

I agree.. i have seen MUCH more little monster kids than little monster dogs...
Just saying....
Usually parents think its "cute" to let little Damien run all over the place and grab things and yell and knock things over... "hee hee isnt he soo cute..awwwww"

One thing i CANT stand is a misbehaved child in public places.. and their parents just laugh and think its cute. Soo very rude...

I guess that analogy with dogs and children might be correct, especially since they've got leashes for kids.

But yeah, I wouldn't take my dog to a garage sale - I have similar reasons with the others who wouldn't take their dogs to one.

Another thing is if the dog has a big tail, this to can cause proublems with breakables.I was at my mothers and her lab mixs tail nocked things over.So a low table of breakables could be wiped out in one shot.
