I am going to start breeding black marans so I bought 24 from a breeder. I also bought 10 cuckoo but not breeding those. Some have feathered feet some dont and I cant tell the cuckoos from the blacks right now. Is the breed standard feathered feet or non feathered feet? Also at what age can you tell the sex of a maran by comb?Any other facts about marans would be useful.

My understanding is that black copper marans can be either feather or clean legged. Both are accepted, but they are not "French" marans unless they have feathered legs. All the cuckoo marans I've seen in stores have been clean legged, so I would guess that the clean legged chicks are your cuckoos and the feathered are bcm. But that's a total guess. The breeder you bought them from ought to know for sure.

They are just black not the black copper. But yeah I bought them and the breeder said they were french black but then someone told me you cant call them french unless they came straight from france and I had no clue if that was true or not

french marans name is used to describe Marans chooks bred to French SOP Feathered legs . USA SOP call for a same thing . as long as they have feathered leg regardless wich variety .they will be called French marans .
other type of marans are Clean legged Bred to the English SOP they are called English type .not recognize in many country .
if your chicks have feathered legs than they are french ,
if they have clean legs ,than they are English
if they are a mixture ,than they hybrid between the 2 .

chooks man
