What is the squat I keep reading about?

Not one of my regular laying hens does the squat. The only one I've seen do it was my Cornish Rock, and only when she first started laying eggs.

So your regular laying hens don't do squat either!

I think some of it depends on breeds and/or personality. My older EE never squatted, but the other 12 girls all do. Sometimes it actually gets a bit annoying...it makes it hard to walk across the run when they all come running in front of me and then stop to squat! I don't know how many times I've almost either stepped on one of them or tripped over them. I'd hate to end up in the hospital with a!

I have 24 pullets at 6 months age. They started laying around 4 months. About that time one day while out there with them all crowding around, I reached down and scratched one on her back. She squatted for me and got up afterwards and shook herself like a dog just out of the bathtub. Over time I did a few more that way to show my wife how they shake their feathers like a wet dog. Now, if I reach my hand out, most will squat. Really, I guess they are just acknowledgiing me as the boss chicken. Some of the black Aussies squat when I walk into the run. You have to watch where you are walking or risk stepping on one of them. My pastor has one who does that too. After reading some of the posts on here, I am almost afraid to post this particular one, but what fun would that be?

Only one of my three squats for me, so I'm convinced they don't all do it. Maybe yours don't?

Mine have been doing the squat since they started laying back in Dec 2007! I didn't have a rooster until this year but they won't
give him squat! I'll reach down to pet the girls, they squat, do a little ground stomp, I'll stroke they're backs from head to tail real fast with both hands then come up they're tail feathers and ruffle them up, then they shake it off as if to say, Thanks mom, I needed that!

Three of my pullets started laying 2 months ago. Only my rhode island red does the squat. My ameracana nor my wyndotte don't. My wyndotte also had the reddest comb and wattle for months but didn't lay! Figure that one!
