What is the sweetest chicken, for kids ?

My vote would be for banties if for no other reason than space and handling considerations. I know when the little kids come out to our farm to pick out their chicks for their backyard flocks a lot of them are a bit intimidated by the size of a full grown Rhode Island Red or even my smaller more closely feathered EEs. When I do take these city children into a pen, I invariably choose the EE pen since those girls and even the roo there is so friendly and docile but they're still big birds. It's easy to get a claw tangled up in clothing and get hurt or get scared when the chicken makes some stupid move which chickens quite often do. To make sure no one, chicken or child, gets hurt I'd say go with a banty breed.

I agree with the D'Uccles. But, I'd nix the rooster thing. It IS a school. If a rooster is there crowing how are they supposed to keep their attention towards what they're learning inside the building?

I have Australorps, White Delewar, Rhode Island Red, Isa brown, and a Buff Orpington, and I will have to say the Orpington is the sweetest. We hold her and love her, she doesn't make noise, she just sits and takes in the love. She is very fluffy too! My vote, Orpington.

Buff Orps. I have a Speckled Sussex that is super sweet and follows me around, but Im not sure that is the norm for that breed. She is beautiful to boot

We also have a speckled sussex that is our FAV chicken!! She is SUPER friendly and will walk right up and wait for you to pick her up.. After her it's silkies and cochins!

I'm sorry, but I wouldn't reccomend RIRs for children. They are highly bird aggressive and will cause you heartbrake if put in with a flock of very docile birds.

I personally haven't had any good experiences with Sexlinks, RIRs, or Wyandottes.

I vote for Sussex, and Faverolles. They are the SWEETEST birds I have EVER been around - they run to me, beg for attention, and follow me around. They are extremely docile and gentle birds - not to mention they are lovely to look at.

Edited to add that we do have a cochin - but she is not a favorite. Eventhough she is very docile, she is NOT personable.
