Good to know-thanks!One of my chickens got that from bumping into the fence to hard. After a few weeks it heeled up nicely & now you can't tell it was ever there.

Ok so I am posting several more photos of “the thing” lol...any help appreciated. Elle the buff orp was so gentle and cooperative in letting me open her mouth and take pics! I don’t see anything in her mouth. There was a piece of debris on her tongue but it washed away so it’s not a lesion. Otherwise to my untrained eyes, she looks normal everywhere but on the beak. I also double checked my other chickens and they all look good so far.
Thank you for the wonderful photos!
Elle is such a sweetheart...don't you just love the gentle nature of BO's.
I would keep watch on that, but am inclined to think she caught it on fencing and the "black thing" is a scab, but time will tell.
If it comes down to it...here's one treatment option(sorry, I'm in a weird mood tonight)
View attachment 1365295 View attachment 1365296 Hi everyone-I promised I would update you on Elle’s condition so here it is: a couple days after I posted, the black thing fell off Elle’s beak and there appeared to be a sore beneath it. It looked good for a few days, but now it appears that she has scraped it or something because she has what looks like dried blood clotting on it. From seeing it today, I believe the original black spot was also clotted blood. I have now painted it with Blu-Kote and will see what happens next. She now has a purple beak. Here is what she looked like this morning before I painted her beak. That is just dried blood/debris on either side of the original spot. I was able to wipe it off. Thanks for your help!
Awwww Elle! Thank you for the update.
Chickens can get themselves into trouble. Sticking their beak through fencing is a biggie for beak injuries. Sometimes a feeder may have a sharp edge as well. Watch her to see if she is trying to get a grass/vegetation outside of the fence. Some never learn or they are just too tempted by what they are trying to get at.
I hope she heals quickly.
She really is sweet and very pretty.Poor Elle. What a sweetie!
