What is this black thing coming out of my pullet’s beak?

I have my first BO and am in awe of her beauty. Got her as a chick thinking she might not be the prettiest hen, but would hopefully be sweet. Who knew she’d be so gorgeous! Enjoy your sweet girl. I hope she feels better soon. Does it seem to be bothering her?

Our chicks were all cute (as most chicks are!) but she was a typical gold fluffy chick. Others were prettier such as our RIR, but as they have grown, the BO's feathers are very full and beautiful and super soft. She is named Elle because my daughter just finished acting in the play Legally Blonde Jr. and that is the main character's name. :) She seems to be feeling fine. I was disappointed today to see that the black crust was back because it had fallen off and when I went to check on her I expected it to be even more healed, but she must have bumped it again. I will see how she is tomorrow. Thanks for asking@ These are really my teenage daughter's chickens but I have really enjoyed them and since she is a teenager, I am quite involved in caring for them at times. ;)

Fowl Pox (dry) - pretty sure. I’m in Central TX & last fall I got 75 day old chicks during what seemed to be a never-ending hot & rainy season w/ loads of mosquitos. Many of my chicks developed the scabby sores just like the one on your hen’s beak. Affected were mostly the beaks but some on the legs & their barely there combs because they were so young. I used VetRx on the affected areas and the lesions did shed off after about 6 weeks. All of my girls survived. I also used a ‘splash’ of apple cider vinegar in their water which I do regularly (1T/gallon).

I have 19 ISA's and they all have Fowl Pox. I was putting Vaseline and Sulfur Ointment on the combs, wattles, and ears. they are beginning to look some better. I washed everyones head in an Iodine 1% solution and some peeled off at that time. After talking with Florida's State Vet, I stopped treating them as he said I didn't have to. Good luck with Elle!!!

By the way Your pictures were fantastic.
